Dec.7 Cubs Recap

2B Luis Valbuena ripped his third homer, scored three runs and is hitting .329 in the VWL for Lara. RHP Ryan Searle made his debut in the Australian League tossing five shutout innings. LHP Frank Del Valle allowed a run in five innings in a no-decision in the VWL.

Venezuelan Winter League

Luis Valbuena smacked his third homer, a two-run shot in the third, and scored three times in Lara's 11-4 win over Caracas. Valbuena finished 2-3 with a walk and is now hitting .329.

Frank Del Valle got the start for Margarita but didn't figure in the decision in the 4-2 loss. The left-hander tossed five innings and allowed a run on two hits and four walks. He fanned three of the 19 hitters he faced. Del Valle, 24, has made six starts and gotten in trouble with his command, issuing 20 walks in 26.1 IP. Despite the walks, he's only allowed seven earned runs with 21 punchouts.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

RF Darnell McDonald went 0-3 but knocked in a run and walked in Obregon's 4-2 loss to Navojoa.

SS Walter Ibarra was 1-4 in Mazatlan's 3-1 loss to Hermosillo.

Puerto Rican Winter League

3B Jonathan Mota went 1-3 with a single and was hit by a pitch in Ponce's 1-0 win over Santurce. SS Edwin Maysonet went 0-4 in the loss.

Australian Baseball League

Ryan Searle made his debut on Saturday as the right-hander earned the win with five shutout innings in Brisbane's 3-0 win over Perth. Searle surrendered four hits and fanned six in his 81-pitch outing. Searle earned Florida State League pitcher of the week honors in April but went on the disabled list and didn't return to Daytona until mid-August. Searle finished the year 2-3 with a 5.67 ERA in 27 IP. He closed out the year earning two saves, both four inning outings to clinch the division and championship series in the D-Cubs title run.
