Dec. 10 Cubs Recap

Junior Lake has ended his stay in the DWL, Marcos Mateo picked up his 9th save and Luis Valbuena extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Venezuelan Winter League

Luis Valbuena (.341) extended his hitting streak to eight games going 2-5 with a run scored in Lara's 8-5 win over Magallanes.

Yoanner Negrin (4-3 4.13 ERA) made his 12th start and didn't figure in the decision of Caracas' 9-5 win over Aragua. He surrendered a homer in the second and never made it out of the third, yielding two walks and a hit batter before another homer cleared the bases. Negrin gave up four hits and walked three in the 66 pitch outing.

Dominican Winter League

Marcos Mateo (3-0 0.93 ERA) picked up his ninth save allowing a hit in the ninth of Estrellas' 3-2 win over Licey. After surrendering a one-out single, the right-hander got a foul out and a groundout to end the game. Mateo, 29, has appeared in 17 games with 22 K in 19.1 IP.

The Estrellas Baseball Club announced on their web site that Junior Lake was no longer able to play for the DWL team. It said Lake was instructed to stop playing and he had only received "permission from the Cubs" to play for part of the season. Cubs.com's Carrie Muskat also reported that the Cubs had shut Lake down in the DWL. The centerfielder appeared in 27 games and hit .343/.386/.457 in 104 AB, tops in the DWL in average. The 23-year-old is expected to start in the outfield for Chicago in 2014.

Frank Batista got the final two outs in Aguilas' 5-2 loss to Escogido. After intentionally walking the first hitter he faced, the right-hander got a fly out to center and pop out to first to end the threat with the bases loaded. Batista has not allowed a run in six innings.

RHP Alberto Cabrera (0-0 7.36 ERA), a candidate for the Cubs bullpen in 2014, made his fifth appearance allowing a run in one inning in Toro's 12-0 loss to Gigantes. A hit batter, a walk, and a single led to the run.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

RF Darnell McDonald was 0-3 with a walk in Obregon's 8-3 loss to Los Mochis. Christian Villanueva walked as a pinch-hitter in the 9th.

SS Walter Ibarra was 104 with two strikeouts in Mazatlan's 3-0 loss to Mexicali.

Puerto Rican Winter League

One-third of Ponce's lineup was Cubs' prospects but the team managed only two hits and lost to Caguas 2-1. SS Jonathan Mota got one of the hits, a single, in four trip to the plate while 3B Greg Rohan and LF Rubi Silva were both 0-3.
