Dec. 14 Cubs Recap

Ryan Searle recorded nine strikeouts and earned his second win in the Australian Baseball League. An injury sidetrack most of 2013 but the 24-year-old right-hander finished strong with Daytona, including two impressive playoff outings.

Australian Baseball League

Ryan Searle went eight innings to earn his second win in as many starts as Brisbane defeated Melbourne 8-3 in the second game of the doubleheader. The right-hander fanned nine, throwing 109 pitches, 77 for strikes. He allowed three runs on six hits and one walk, two of the runs coming on a homer in the fifth. Searle tossed five shutout innings in his ABL debut on Dec. 7.

Venezuelan Winter League

2B Luis Valbuena continues to put together a solid season in the VWL going 1-3 with an RBI. Valbuena (.323) also walked twice and scrod a run in Lara's 8-7 loss to Magallanes.

Dominican Winter League

Frank Batista worked two scoreless innings but got tagged with a blown save when the tying run scored on a fielder's choice in the eighth. Batista entered the game with runners on second and third and after an intentional walk, got an out before a ground out plated the tying run. He retired the final hitter of the inning and worked a 1-2-3 ninth with a pari of strikeouts. Batista has yet to allow a run in eight games for Aguilas, who beat Escogido 6-5 in 10 innings.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

RF Darnell McDonald went 0-4 with two strikeouts in Obregon's 6-1 loss to Mexicali.

SS Walter Ibarra was 0-3 with a walk in Mazatlan's 2-0 win over Guasave.

Puerto Rican Winter League

No Cubs prospects saw action.
