Cubs announce 2014 coaching staffs

After a successful minor league season for the Cubs system in 2013, a large majority of the coaching staff will return for 2014 including managers Marty Pevey (Iowa), Buddy Bailey (Tennessee), Dave Keller (Daytona), Mark Johnson (Kane County) and Gary Van Tol (Boise).

With AAA pitching coach Mike Mason getting promoted as the organization's assistant pitching coordinator, the Cubs minor league pitching coaches will have a different look for 2014 while most of the minor league coaching staff will remain unchanged.

Marty Pevey (Iowa), Buddy Bailey )Tennessee), Dave Keller (Daytona), Mark Johnson (Kane County) and Gary Van Tol (Boise) all return to manage their respective affiliates in 2014. Hitting coaches Brian Harper (Iowa), Desi Wilson (Tennessee), Mariano Duncan (Daytona), Tom Byers (Kane County), and Bill Buckner (Boise) all return for 2014.

The shakeup is in the pitching ranks as Mason was promoted to the new position of assistant pitching coordinator and will aid Derek Johnson, the Cubs pitching coordinator and former Vanderbilt pitching coach. Mason spent six season as Iowa's pitching coach and has 22 years of coaching experience after a seven-year MLB career with Texas (1982-87), Chicago (1987) and Minnesota (1988). He was the Royals minor league pitching coordinator before joining the Cubs organization.

The Cubs named Bruce Walton as the new pitching coach for AAA Iowa. Walton spent three years as the Toronto Blue Jays pitching coach from 2010-12 and has 17 years of experience in Jays' organization, after a four-year career with Oakland (1991-92), Montreal (1993) and Colorado (1994).

Storm Davis, who oversaw all the young pitching prospects in Daytona, moves up with most of those arms to AA Tennessee. Ron Villone was promoted from Kane County to Daytona, and David Rosario moved from Boise to Kane County. Brian Lawrence, who spent last year as a Class A pitching coach in the San Diego Padres organization, was hired for the same position in Boise.

Coaching staffs for the Cubs other short-season teams are : Mesa Cubs—Jimmy Gonzalez, manager; Andrew Taveras, pitching coach and Ricardo Medina, hitting coach. Dominican Cubs—Juan Caberja, manager; Leo Hernandez, pitching coach; Oscar Bernard, hitting coach; Yudith Ozorio, assistant coach; Venezuelan Cubs—Pedro Gonzalez, manager; Angel Guzman, pitching coach; Franklin Blanco, hitting coach.

The Cubs also added a par of assistant coaches: Leo Perez (Tennessee) and Judith Osorio (Dominican).

Trainers for the Cubs minor league affiliates are Scott Barringer, Iowa; Shane Nelson, Tennessee; Jonathan Fiero, Kane County; Toby Williams, Boise; Mike McNulty, Mesa; Jose Alvarez, Dominican; Arnoldo Goite, Venezuelan.

The Cubs also announced their 2014 minor league coordinators.
