Cubs sign pitcher Jonathan Sanchez
The Cubs singed another pitcher, inking left-hander Jonathan Sanchez to a minor league deal, which includes incentives if he makes the major league roster.
Sanchez, 31, pitched for six season for San Francisco (2006-11) going 38-46 in 118 starts with a 4.26 ERA and a 1.388 WHIP. He tossed a no-hitter in 2009 and led NL pitchers in 2010 allowing only 6.6 H/9. He also led baseball with 96 walks in 193.1 innings.
The Giants traded Sanchez to the Royals for Melky Cabrera in Nov. of 2011 and Sanchez made 12 starts for Kansas City (1-6 7.76 ERA, 7.4 BB/9) before he was shipped to Colorado in July, and made three more starts without any success. He signed with the Pirates this spring and after five games (0-3 11.85 ERA) was released and spent the rest of the season in AAA Albuquerque after the Dodgers picked him up off waivers (7-3 5.13, 14 G, 66.2 IP, 42 BB, 79 K).
Sanchez's best pitch is his four-seam fastball which sits about 90 mph and he also throws a curve, sinker and splitter. Its a low-risk signing for the Cubs and another left-handed arm in the bullpen, and at the very least, minor league depth from the left-handed side in case of injuries or trades. Sanchez's problems in recent years are his ability to throw strikes. Will be interesting to see if Cubs' coaching staff can correct the problems.
