Dec. 20-21 Cubs Recap

Ryan Searle fanned nine in a complete game as the right-hander won his third straight start in the Australian League.

Australian Baseball League

Dec. 21—Ryan Searle is on a roll. After eight shutout innings of relief in Daytona's playoff run, the right-hander had picked up right where he left off in early September in the Florida State League, with a nine-inning complete game on Saturday as Brisbane defeated Adelaide 3-1 in the second game of a double-header. The Australian native fanned nine in the gem, allowing three hits, two walks, and an unearned run. Searle improved to 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA and has 24 strikeouts in three games (22 IP). Searle missed most of 2013 with an arm injury after earning FSL player of the week honors in April.

Dec. 21—RHP Yeiper Castillo (5-1 3.57 ERA) worked 2.1 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts in Zulia's 5-0 win over Aragua.

2B Luis Valbuena (.306/.442/.441) went 0-3 with a walk in Lara's 3-2 win over Margarita.

RHP Eduardo Figueroa got the final out in the ninth of La Guaira's 7-2 loss to Caracas.

Dec. 20—Luis Valbuena went 1-2 with a walk in Lara's 14-1 loss to Zulia.

Dominican Winter League

Dec. 21—LHP Jeffry Antigua, who pitched for the Cubs organization last year but is still a free agent, worked a 1-2-3 eighth with a strikeout in Toros' 4-0 loss to Licey.

Dec. 21—Jonathan Mota smacked his second homer but it was Ponce's only run in the 3-1 loss to Caguas. Mota (.259) went 2-4 and added a triple. LF Rubi Silva (.259) and Greg Rohan (.129) both went 0-3.
