Dec. 28-29 Cubs Recap

Cubs catching prospect Willson Contreras saw his first action in the Venezuelan Winter League in nearly two months for Aragua.

Venezuelan Winter League

Dec. 29—Eduardo Figueroa made his first start for La Guaria but allowed four runs on six hits and three walks in 3.1 innings in a 7-6 loss to Aragua. It was Figueroa's fifth game and he's surrendered eight earned runs in six innings on 11 hits.

Dec. 28—RHP Yeiper Castillo improved to 6-1 as the right-hander get the win in relief allowing a run in three innings. He gave up a hit and walked two in Zulia's 3-2 win over Margarita in the first game of a DH.

2B Luis Valbuena went 2-3 with a double and raised his average to .311 in Lara's 11-3 loss to Caribes.

C Wilson Contreras saw his first action since Nov. 1, getting the start at catcher on Saturday night. Contreras went 0-2 with a walk before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the 8th. Aragua fell to La Guaria 5-4 in 10 innings.

Dominican Winter League

Dec. 29—Licey shutout Gigantes 2-0 handing them their first loss of the round-robin playoffs and moving into a first-place tie at 2-1. Aguilas (1-2) scored twice in the top of the 8th and beat Escogido (1-2) 7-5. Don't look for many Cubs to play in the DWL playoffs as several Cubs prospects have returned to the states at the request of the big league club. Licey announced last week that 2B Arismendy Alcantara had been taken off the roster at the Cubs request.

Dec. 28—Gigantes improved to 2-0 with a 4-2 win over Licey (1-1) in the second day of the round-robin format. Escogido (1-1) beat Aguilas (0-2) 6-1.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

Dec. 29—No Cubs prospects saw action. SS Walter Ibarra, RF Darnell McDonald and 3B/DH Christian Villanueva have not played recently and may been done for the season.

Dec. 28—No Cubs prospects saw action.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Dec. 29—Jonathan Mota went 0-3 with a walk in Ponce's 4-2 win over Mayaguez.

Dec. 28—No Cubs prospects saw action. Jonathan Mota, Rubi Silva and Greg Rohan all play for Ponce but had the day off.

Australian Baseball League

Dec. 29—Ryan Searle got handed his first loss despite only allowing one earned run, a homer, in seven innings in Brisbane's 1-0 loss to Sydney. Searle gave up four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Searle is now 3-1 with a 1.24 ERA in 29 IP in four starts.
