Jan. 7-9 Cubs Recap

Cub prospect Yoanner Negrin earned his first playoff win with a five-inning, 98-pitch performance in Caracas' 8-4 win over Zulia in the Venezuelan Winter league round-robin playoffs.

Venezuelan Winter League

Jan. 9—Yoanner Negrin got the win in Caracas' 8-4 win over Zulia (1-5) in the round-robin playoffs. The right-hander allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits and a walk in five innings with four strikeouts. Negrin threw 98 pitches in the outing, 67 for strikes, and faced 21 hitters. Magallanes (6-1) kept first-place with a 6-4 win over La Guaria (2-5).

Jan. 8—In a battle for first, Magallanes (5-1) outlasted Caribes (4-2) with a 6-5 win in 13 innings. It was a night for free baseball as La Guaira (2-4) downed Zulia 8-7 in 12 innings. Zulia's Yeiper Castillo worked 1.1 scoreless innings, pitching around a hit and two walks.

Jan. 7—Magallanes (4-1) moved into a first-place tie with Caribes (4-1) with an 11-5 win. Caracas whipped La Guaria 12-2.

Dominican Winter League

Jan. 9—Escogido (8-3) beat Licey (5-6) 3-2 while Gigantes (5-6) had a 8-7 walk-off win over Aguilas (5-6) in the bottom of the ninth. Former Cubs reliever Marcos Mateo, selected by D-Backs in Rule 5 draft, took the loss allowing Gigantes' winning run.

Jan. 8—Escogido (7-3) increased their lead to two games with a 9-2 win over Aguilas (4-6). Licey (5-5) fell to Gigantes (4-6) falling 3-0.

Jan. 7—No games scheduled.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

Jan. 9—No games scheduled.

Jan. 8—Hermosillo and Navojoa both won their best-of-seven series. Hermosillo knocked off Guasave 6-0 while Navojoa beat Los Mochis with a 16-4 win. Despite the series loss, Los Mochis advances to the semi-finals to face Hermosillo while Navojoa battles Mexicali in the other semi-final.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Jan. 9—No games scheduled.

Jan. 8—Mayaguez (4-1) beat Caguas (2-3) 3-0 while Ponce (3-2) blanked Carolina (1-4) 2-0. Ponce's Jonathan Mota went 1-4 with single.

Jan. 7—Caguas (2-2) handed Mayaguez (3-1) its first loss of the playoffs with a 3-1 win. Carolina (1-3) blanked Ponce (2-2) 3-0. Ponce's Jonathan Mota grounded out in all three at-bats.
