Jan. 10-12 Cubs Recap

Cubs prospect appearances are infrequent as the Caribbean playoff series are in full swing. Here's a look at the recent three days and a roster move the Cubs made on Jan. 7.

Venezuelan Winter League

Jan. 12—Magallanes leads the five-team round-robin with a two-game lead over Caribes (5-4) and Caracas (5-4). No Cubs prospects saw action.

Jan. 11— RHP Yeiper Castillo allowed a run on a hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning in Zulia's 2-1 loss to Magallanes.

Jan. 10—Eduardo Figueroa worked a 1-2-3 ninth in La Guaria's 9-1 win over Zulia.

Dominican Winter League

Jan. 12—Escogido holds a two game lead over Licey (7-7) and three games on Aguilas and Gigantes. No Cubs prospects saw action.

Jan. 11—Frank Batista worked a scoreless ninth with a walk and a strikeout in Aguilas 10-1 win over Licey.

Jan. 10—Aguilas (5-7) knocked off first place Escogido (8-4) 4-3 while Licey (6-6) downed Gigantes. Former Cubs prospect Marcos Mateo earned his fourth save for Aguilas striking out the final two hitters in the 4-3 win. Mateo was selected by the Diamondbacks in the Rule 5 draft.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

Jan. 12—Both semi-finals are tied at 1-1 between Navojoa and Mexicali, and Los Mochis and Hermosillo. No Cubs prospects are on the rosters.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Jan. 12—Mayaguez (7-1) leads the round-robin playoffs and holds a three-game lead over Caguas and Ponce. Jonathan Mota didn't play for Ponce on Sunday.

Jan. 11—Jonathan Mota went 1-2 with a run scored and a walk and was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the 7th, in Ponce's 10-5 loss to Mayaguez.

Jan. 10—Mayaguez (5-1) beat Ponce (3-3) with a 4-3 win in 12 innings. Cubs prospect Jonathan Mota was 1-5 in Ponce's 4-3 loss to Mayaguez.

Australian Baseball League

Jan. 11—Ryan Searle pitched a complete game but came out on the short-end of a 2-1 loss as Brisbane fell to Perth. Searle fanned a season-high 11 and didn't walk a hitter. He surrendered two runs on 10 hits and lost his third straight game after a 3-0 start. Searle has a 2.63 ERA in 41 innings with 41 K.

Transactions—Cubs release 2011 pick

The Cubs released 2011 9th round pick Garrett Schlecht on Jan. 7 after three seasons. Schlecht, a high school standout from Waterloo High School in Illinois, Schlecht never made it out of the Arizona Rookie League playing just nine games after turning pro. The outfielder looked like he may be figuring it out in 2012, hitting .252/.359/.345 in 143 plate appearances and hit his first pro homer. In 29 games in 2013, he only hit .176/.250/.235.
