Cubs sign Coghlan, Jan. 13-15 Cubs Recap

The Cubs added their second Miami Marlins outfielder of the off season signing former Rookie of the Year Chris Coghlan to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. The Cubs are holding their 2nd annual Rookie Development Program in Chicago this week that culminates with a trip to the Cubs Convention this weekend.

Cubs sign outfielder Chris Coghlan

The Cubs added their second Miami Marlin of the off season signing Chris Coghlan to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training. The Cubs traded for Justin Riggiano earlier this winter. The 28-year-old earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2009 hitting .321/.390/.460 with nine homers and 47 RBI in 128 games. He's been unable to match those number ever since and spent most of 2012 in the minors. Coghlan hit .256/.318/.354 in 70 games in 2013 and showed his versatility, playing all three outfield positions as well as second and third.

Cubs hold 2nd Rookie Development Program

The Chicago Cubs held their second annual rookie Development Program this week in Chicago as 15 prospects are taking part-in the week-long event.

The Cubs Big 4—Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, Jorge Soler and Albert Almora—were all in attendance along with pitchers C.J. Edwards, Armando Rivero, Pierce Johnson, Arodys Vizcaino, Neil Ramirez, Eric Jokisch, and Kyle Hendricks. Other position players participating were 2B Arismendy Alcantara, OF Rubi Silva, 3B Mike Olt, and 3B Christian Villanueva.

Besides instructional work, the prospects also took in a Chicago Blackhawk's game; visited a hospital with Clark, the Cubs new mascot; and heard several speakers including owner Tom Rickets, president Theo Epstein, manager Rick Renteria and former player Rick Sutcliffe.

Venezuelan Winter League

Jan. 15—No Cubs prospects saw action.

Jan. 14—Yoanner Negrin got his second win of the playoffs allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits in his five innings of work. Negrin threw 86 pitches in Caracas' 5-3 win over Magallanes. Yeiper Castillo earned his second hold of the playoffs with a walk and a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning in Zulia's 10-4 win over La Guaria.

Dominican Winter League

Jan. 15—No Cubs prospects saw action.

Jan. 14—Escogido (10-5) clinched the championship in dramatic fashion with a no-hitter over Licey (7-8) as four pitchers combines for gem in the 6-0 win. Former Cubs draft pick Jon Leicester blanked the Tigers for five innings. Gigantes (7-8) beat Aguilas (6-9) 6-2. Frank Batista worked 1.1 innings allowing two hits with a strikeout for Aguilas.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

Jan. 15—No Cubs prospects saw action.

Jan. 14—Los Mochis, the lucky loser in the first round of the playoffs, took a 2-1 lead over top-seeded Hermosillo with a 6-3 win. Navojoa grabbed a 2-1 lead with a 6-4 win over Mexicali.

Jan. 13—No game scheduled.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Jan. 15—Jonathan Mota (.265) had a pair of doubles, scored twice, and knocked in a run during Ponce's 7-2 win over Carolina.

Jan. 14—Mayaguez lost for just the second time as Carolina (2-7) won 4-0. Caguas pulled to within two-games of first with a 1-0 win over Ponce (4-5). Jonathan Mota went 0-4 with four strikeouts for Ponce.

Jan. 13—No game scheduled.
