AAA—Round Rock 12, Iowa 2
Round Rock blasted Iowa pitching for five homers, two coming from former I-Cub Brent Lillibridge.
At the Dish: Iowa was held to six hits and scored both of their runs in the third on a RBI groundout by Chris Valaika and a RBI single from Josh Vitters. Christian Villanueva, who led the Southern League last year in doubles, was 2-4 with a pair of two-baggers. Jonathan Mota doubled and scored in the third.
On the Hill: Chris Rusin surrendered three homers in six innings as the Express plated four runs on five hits off the left-hander. Rusin threw 90 pitches in the outing and recorded five strikeouts and walked one.....Iowa's bullpen of Eduardo Figueroa, Marcos Mateo and Marcus Hatley didn't do much to stop the Express. Figueroa was charged with three unearned runs, Mateo got tagged for four runs, including a homer, and Hatley allowed a homer in the ninth and struckout the side.
I-Cubs Notes: According to Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register, I-Cubs manager Marty Pevey told him Javier Baez could come off the DL and be ready for Sunday's game as a DH. Baez took batting practice prior to Saturday's gamed also ran the base during pre-game workout.......Carlos Pimentel get the start on Sunday against Round Rock and Kyle Hendricks is back on the hill for Monday night's game.
AA—Birmingham 5, Tennessee 4
Birmingham took advantage of 11 walks and a throwing error in the fifth to win the opening game of the series./P>
At the Dish: Jeudy Valdez and Charlie Cutler both knocked in two runs as Valdez finished with two hits and Cutler was 1-4 with a double.....Kris Bryant went 1-5 with a double and extended his on-base streak to 15 games.....Smokies hitters fanned 11 times.
On the Hill: Matt Loosen didn't have his command Saturday night as the right-hander walked eight and didn't make it out of the fourth innings. Loosen threw 93 pitches, only 47 for strikes, and allowed three runs on three hits with five punchouts.....Jeffrey Lorick took the loss in relief allowing two unearned runs to score in the fifth. He surrendered two hits in 1.1 frames with two walks and a strikeout....P.J. Francescon tossed two innings of scoreless relief and has worked 9.1 frames without yielding an earned run.....Tony Zych pitched a scoreless 8th with two walks and a strikeout.
Smokies Notes: Smokies continue their five-game trip to Birmingham on Sunday as C.J. Edwards is scheduled to start...........Nothing official yet but RHP Pierce Johnson is expected to join the Tennessee rotation soon as he's close to returning after a hamstring injury in spring training set him back. Johnson was the Cubs first-round supplemental pick in 2012 and pitched in '13 at Kane County and Daytona........Armando Rivero is off to a great start out of the bullpen. To go along with three saves, Rivero has 15 K and 2 BB in 7.1 IP and LHH are 1-9 and RHH are 2-16.
High A—Game 1—Tampa 10, Daytona 4; Game 2—Daytona 9, Tampa 1
Felix Pena had another quality outing and earned his first win as Daytona snapped its six-game losing streak with a victory in the night cap over Tampa.
At the Dish: GAME 1—Daytona got on the board in the first stringing together four singles from Pin-Chieh Chen, Albert Almora, Bijan Rademacher and Chadd Krist—Daytona going up 2-0 on Krist's hit. A Daniel Vogelbach ground out knocked in the third run and Jeimer Candelario followed with a two-out RBI double, his first double of the season and broke a 0-10 streak of RISP......Daytona was held to one hit after the first inning, a single by Giuseppe Papaccio.......Saunders swiped his 7th base.; GAME 2—Daytona's offense came to life scoring nine runs in Game 2. Rademacher had the big blow for the D-Cubs, a three-run homer in the third. He finished 2-4 with two runs..... Oliver Zapata knocked in two and Almora went 2-4 with a RBI.....Vogelbach was 1-2 with two runs scored and a RBI.
On the Hill: GAME 1—Yao-Ling Wang had a short night retiring only four hitters before being lifted in the second. Wang was charged with six runs, five earned, on six hits, four for extra bases..........Ben Wells walked his first two hitters he faced, forcing in a run, before recording the final two outs. Wells never made it out of the third as Tampa loaded the bases and Starling Peralta came in and got the final out. Wells ended with a line of 1.1 IP, 2H 0R 3BB, 2K..........Peralta was charged with three runs in 2.1 innings and allowed a homer to go along with four punchouts.....Stephen Perakslis tossed the final two innings, surrendering a homer and two strikeouts.; GAME 2—Felix Pena (1-3 1.38 ERA) earned his first win of the season, allowing one run on three hits and four walks in six innings. The right-hander fanned eight........ Michael Jensen pitched a scoreless 7th.
D-Cubs Notes: The D-Cubs have Sunday off and then head out on a five-game road trip, three to Clearwater (April 21-23) and two more at Brevard County....Vogelbach is 3-26 with RISP........Candelario has committed eight errors at third base
Low A—Dayton 3, Kane County 2
An RBI triple in the bottom of the ninth gave Daytona the walk-off win.
At the Dish: The Cougars scored both of their runs in the second on a RBI single by Daniel Lockhart and then with two outs, Trey Martin dropped a perfect bunt down the third base line for a hit, scoring Lockhart. Kane County had four of their eight hits in the second. Lockhart finished 3-4 and Martin was 2-3.
On the Hill: Duane Underwood made his second start after working three innings in his MWL debut April 13 vs. Lake County (3H, 1ER, 1BB, 5K). The Dragons didn't made solid contract with Underwood as the right-hander allowed one run on three singles in five innings. He threw 71 pitches in the outing, 44 for strikes, and retired the final seven hitters he faced. He ended the game with four strikeouts.........Gerardo Concepcion was charged with is second blown save as the lefty allowed the tying run to score in the sixth, on three hits....Zack Godley relieved in the sixth and tossed two more scoreless frames retiring all seven hitters he faced, four on strikes......Nathan Dorris took the loss, surrendering the game winning triple after a leadoff single opened the ninth.
Cougars Notes: Cougars have Sunday off and then host Beloit for three day games and end the four-game series with a 6:30 p.m. start on April 24.
