Baez off the DL, DH on Sunday
After missing eight games with an ankle injury, Javier Baez returned to the Iowa lineup on Sunday as the DH. Baez hurt his ankle on Friday, April 11, taking ground balls before the game in Memphis. Not a great return for Baez as he was 0-4 with three strikeouts against Round Rock. In eight games before the injury, Baez was hitting .154/.214/.423 with two homers and three RBI. To make room on roster, IF Edgar Gonzalez was placed on DL with right calf strain.
AAA—Round Rock 6, Iowa 0
Round Rock blanked Iowa as the I-Cubs dropped their third straight.
At the Dish.........Iowa had their chances the first four innings, collecting four hits, drawing a walk, a hit-by-pitch and two stolen bases but failed to score, leaving all six on base. A leadoff single by Matt Szczur was was wiped out by a double play in the fifth and a leadoff walk by Josh Vitters in the sixth didn't make it any farther. Round Rock pitching retired 11 in a row before a Logan Watkins double in the ninth.....Szczur and Watkins finished with two hits each and DH Javier Baez went 0-4 with three strikeouts in his return from the DL.......Watkins (.281) has a seven-game hitting streak......Arismendy Alcantara (.246) was 1-4 with two stolen bases (5).
On the Hill.......... Carlos Pimentel retired the first eight hitters he faced before a third inning walk. Round Rock put runners on the corners after a throwing error and single in the fourth but the right-hander got a strikeout and a double play (3-6-3) to end the threat. A solo homer in the fifth put Round Rock up 1-0 and a leadoff single in the sixth, a wild pickoff throw, and a RBI single ended Pimentel's day after 81 pitches. He finished with a line of 6 IP, 4H, 3R 3 ER, 2BB 5K.......Zac Rosscup was greeted with a double on his first pitch and after a strikeout and a intentional walk, walked two straight, forcing in a pair of runs. A two-run single by the ninth hitter of the inning put Round Rock up 6-0 and ended Rosscup's day. It was the first earned runs Rosscup had allowed in AAA, dating back to '13....Alberto Cabrera worked 1.1 scoreless frames with two punchouts and Neil Ramirez worked a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts.
I-Cubs Notes: Kyle Hendricks gets the ball on Monday night and Eric Jokisch is scheduled for Tuesday to finish out the home stand........Iowa is now 8-9 and trails first-place Oklahoma City by three games.
AA—Tennessee 8, Birmingham 3
At the Dish...... Kris Bryant stroked a RBI single to score John Andreoli, who singled to open the game and stole second. Tennessee scored five times in the fifth as Rubi Silva and Bryant both delivered two-run singles. The inning started with Charlie Cutler and Judy Valdez singling off the pitcher and after an Andreoli walk, Stephen Bruno ripped a RBI single. .......A throwing error by Gordon Beckham and a RBI single from Dustin Geiger plated two runs in the seventh..........Bruno, Silva and Bryant all had two hits......Bryant has reached base in 15 straight games.......Bruno got hit in the first inning, the seventh time he's been hit, top in the minors.
On the Hill........ C.J. Edwards pitched a season-high six innings and earned his first AA win. The right-hander retired the first seven hitters and the eighth hitter reached on a passed ball after striking out. Edwards pitched out of a jam in the third but allowed a two-out, two-run single in the 4th. Hitters were 1-20 with RISP against Edwards before the hit. The 22-year-old only allowed three hits and two walks while fanning four, throwing 91 pitches, 56 for strikes. He has 20 K in 20.2 innings.........Hunter Cervenka got off to a shaky start in the seventh with a leadoff double and then a walk, but a grounder to Bryant at third, resulted in a double play, and he got out of the inning. Cervenka allowed a run in the 8th and finished with aline of 2 IP, 2H 1ER, 1BB 2K. .....Armando Rivero worked a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out the game's final hitter.
Smokies Notes: Dae-Eun Rhee is scheduled to make the start at 12:30 p.m. EST on Monday afternoon in Birmingham.
The D-Cubs had the day off and head to Clearwater on Monday for the start of a three-game series. Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta is scheduled to make his fourth and final rehab start before joining Chicago.
Low A—Kane County
Kane County had Sunday off and are back in action on Monday as they host Beloit in the first-game of a four-game set beginning at noon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva. Jen-Ho Tseng is on the mound for Kane County.
