Cubs April 28 Minor League Recap

Javier Baez hits his third homer to help lead Iowa to its sixth straight win and Tennessee scored four runs in the sixth to beat Huntsville for the second straight night. Daytona lost a slugfest at Lakeland and Kane County saws its winning streak snapped in a game shortened by rain.

AAA—Iowa 6, Omaha 3

Javier Baez launched a three-run homer and Eric Jokisch tossed six plus innings to help Iowa to its six straight win.

At the Dish: Lars Anderson had a big night at he plate with three hits, including his first homer as a I-Cubs. He added a double and two RBI.....Baez crushed his third homer,a three-run shot in the first inning, after Chris Coghlan and Arismendy Alcantara had singled......Luis Flores had two hits, including a single off his former teammate Casey Coleman.....Iowa had 10 hits and drew six walks off Omaha pitching.....

On the Hill: Eric Jokisch logged 160 innings in AA last season with a respectable 3.42 ERA and a .240 BAA. He continued to impress this spring as a non-roster invitee, tossing six scoreless frames in two games. For his second straight outing, Jokisch fanned eight and only allowed two runs in 6.1 innings. He allowed six hits and two walks, throwing 97 pitches, 58 for strikes.....Alberto Cabrera got the final two outs in the 7th but allowed a solo homer in the 8th to earn his first hold....Blake Parker picked up his third save striking out the side in the ninth.

I-Cubs Notes: Former Cub Casey Coleman returned to Iowa but was in the opposing dugout. He pitched a scoreless 8th. Coleman was released by Chicago after one game with the I-Cubs and signed by the Royals. In three relief appearances (5.1 IP) with Omaha, the 26-year-old is 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA........When Javier Baez got injured, Logan Watkins and Chris Valaika filled in at SS, the education of Arismendy Alcantara continued at second. The 22-year-old has had a few big games at the plate and leads the PCL in triples but isn't ready for the big leagues. Alcantara needs to be playing every day, learning how to adjust from both sides of the plate, and logging innings at second. He provides the Cubs excellent upper level depth and at worse, could serve as a back-up switch-hitting, middle infielder that can pinch-run and shows pop from the left side. As a member of the 40-man roster, its likely Alcantara gets a September call-up..........With relief pitcher Jose Veras on the DL (strained oblique), the I-Cubs Brain Schlitter returned to Chicago for the second time and IF Edgar Gonzalez was activated from the DL.

AA—Tennessee 4, Huntsville 1

Tennessee rallied for four runs in the sixth and Corey Black tossed six strong innings for the Smokies second straight win.

At the Dish: With the Rally Llama dancing on the video scoreboard to start the sixth, the Smokes responded with four runs. After Charlie Cutler was hit by a pitch and John Andreoli singled, Zeke DeVoss dropped a bunt single that was thrown away by the pitcher, allowing two runs to score. Kris Bryant followed with his eighth double and 12th RBI, scoring DeVoss. Dustin Geiger reached on a fielder choice and scored on Rafael Lopez' 9th double of the season.......Bryant extended his on-base streak to 24 games.

On the Hill: The Southern League's Pitcher of the Week took the mound Monday night and surrendered a first inning homer, the only run the Stars would score. Black (2-1 2.35 ERA) only needed 81 pitches, 49 for strikes, as Huntsville managed two more hits and a walk off the right-hander. Black fanned five and hit a batter........Jeffrey Lorick earned his second hold, needing only 20 pitches to retire all six hitters he faced.......Tony Zych earned his first save getting the Stars out in the ninth.

Smokies Notes: Tennessee has Tuesday off and then travel to Chattanooga and are scheduled to face Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw in a rehab start on Wednesday.

On the Hill: Rob Zastryzny continues to struggle in his first full season as the left-hander surrendered five runs in the first, four coming on a grand slam. Zastryzny threw 28 pitches in the frame as he walked two and gave up two singles. The rest of the night wasn't any better as he allowed three more runs and finished the game with a line of 4 IP, 8 H, 8 ER, 4BB, 4K.......Stephen Perakslis fanned three in two innings but yielded three runs on four hits and a walk.....Arodys Vizcaino added another scoreless inning to his FSL resume allowing a walk and now has a season line of 8 IP, 6 H, 1ER, 4 BB, 8 K........Andrew McKirahan retired all three hitters he faced in the 8th.
