Cubs May 3 Minor League Recap

Kris Bryant had a career-high four hits, including his sixth homer as Tennessee won its sixth straight. Pitching prospect Jen-Ho Tseng improved to 3-0 and fanned eight to help Kane County to a win. Iowa's bats hit a sour note in Nashville and Daytona was rained out for the third straight night.

AAA—Nashville 3, Iowa 1

Nashville held Iowa to just three hits as they handed the I-Cubs their third straight defeat.

At the Dish: Iowa was limited to two hits over the first seven innings, a double from Christian Villanueva and a single from Logan Watkins but finally got on the board in the 8th. After two walks, Lars Anderson delivered a RBI pinch-hit single.......Iowa hitters fanned 13 times.

On the Hill: Kyle Hendricks (3-2 4.25 ERA) didn't make it out of the sixth inning as he only got one out before a runs scored and Zac Rosscup came into the game. Hendricks threw 93 pitches, 63 for strikes, and fanned eight. He allowed three runs on five hits with one of the runs scoring on a wild pitch......Rosscup allowed a double in the sixth, surrendering an inherited runner before getting the final two outs. He finished with a line of 1.2 IP, 1H 1BB 2K......Alberto Cabrera worked a 1-2-3 eighth.

I-Cubs Notes: With Jake Arrieta added to the Cubs roster, Zac Rosscup was optioned back to Iowa........The I-Cubs also activated Brett Jackson was the DL as Chris Coghlan was called to Chicago to take the place of Ryan Sweeney, who went on the DL with a hamstring injury. Coghlan was the last outfielder cut in spring training and the former NL Rookie of the Year will likely only be on the roster until the return of Justin Ruggiano or Sweeney. Coghlan was 17-70 with nine runs and six stolen bases in 24 games.........The Cubs have loaned Yoanner Negrin to a team in the Mexican League.

AA—Tennessee 8, Chattanooga 4

Tennessee ran their winning streak to six games as Kris Bryant had a a career-high four hits and Charlie Cutler knocked in four runs.

At the Dish: Two walks and a infield single loaded the bases and Charlie Cutler cleared them with a double for a 3-0 lead after four hitters in the first. Rubi Silva added a RBI single to cap off the four-run first. Tennessee added three runs in the fourth, two coming on Kris Bryant's sixth homer. Bryant was 4-5 and scored twice.....Cutler ended the day 3-5 and knocked in four runs....Rubi Silva finished with two hits while John Andreoli and Zeke DeVoss both scored twice at the top of the order.

On the Hill: Pierce Johnson (1-1 3.86 ERA) worked six solid innings to earn his first AA victory. The right-hander fanned five, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks. He threw 86 pitches, 53 for strikes, and got seven ground ball outs.....Ryan Searle continues to struggle, giving up two runs on four hits in an inning.....Hunter Cervenka worked around three walks over the final two frames.

Smokies Notes: John Andreoli has reached base in 22 straight games and stole his 12th base, tops for all Cubs minor leaguers.

High A—Daytona

For the third straight night, rain and wet field conditions canceled the D-Cubs game with Clearwater. Two of the three games will be made up as doubleheaders on May 24-25 when the Threshers return to Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Daytona hosts Lakeland on Sunday at 5:35 EST.

Low A—Kane County 3, Burlington 2

Cael Brockmeyer knocked in two runs including the go-ahead RBI in the sixth as Kane County beat Burlington for the second straight night.

At the Dish: Shawon Dunston got the Cougars on the board in the second with a RBI single, scoring Jacob Rogers who led off the frame with a double. Carlos Penalver walked and stole second to start the second, and then raced home on Benjamin Carhart's RBI single. Cael Brockmeyer's RBI single in the sixth put the Cougars up 3-2, scoring Yasiel Balaguert, who singled and took second on wild pitch. Brockmeyer added RBI double in the 8th, scoring Rogers who reached on his second two-bagger of the game.....Dunston finished with two hits......Jordan Hankins was 1-4 and is now hitting .288....

On the Hill: For his second straight start, Jen-Ho Tseng (3-0, 2.73 ERA) had trouble in the first inning but the 19-year-old shut down the Bees the rest of the night. Three straight hits to start the game and a ground ball plated two runs. He fanned six in six innings and surrendered eight hits but didn't walk anyone........Jose Arias worked 1.2 sorrels frames with two strikeouts for his second hold........Zack Godley earned his sixth save and ran his scoreless streak to 12.2 innings. He has 24 K and 5 BB in 13 IP.

Cougars Notes: C Benjamin Carhart was activated from the disabled list and Danny Canela was put on the DL.
