AAA—New Orleans 9, Iowa 1
Iowa (18-14) was held to four hits and blanked for seven innings at New Orleans.
At the Dish: The I-Cubs only run came in the 8th when Brett Jackson singled, took third on abase hit off the bat of Eli Whiteside, and scored on Matt Szczur's groundout. Arismendy Alcantara and Logan Watkins had the other two hits.
On the Hill: A two out error by first baseman Chris Valiaka opened the door for four unearned runs off Kyle Hendricks in the fourth. Hendricks (3-3 3.64) allowed eight hits in in six innings with six strikeouts. The right-hander threw 102 pitches, 74 for strikes.....Alberto Cabrera failed to record an out in the seventh as he allowed five runs, including a pari of homer.....Eduardo Figueroa threw the final innings, both scoreless, with three strikeouts.
I-Cubs Notes: Eric Jokisch (2-2 3.65 ERA) makes his 7th start as Iowa faces New Orleans in the fourth and final game of the series.
AA— Tennessee 5, Birmingham 4
At the Dish: Jorge Soler saw his first action since opening night when he went on the DL with a hamstring injury. Soler was on base all four times, including a two-run double to tie the game in the third. He also singled, walked twice, and scored a run...... Kris Bryant ripped his 9th homer of the season, a solo shot in the fifth, and added two singles in four trips to the plate.......Jae-Hoon Ha delivered the game-wining two-run single in the seventh.....John Andreoli walked and scored to extend his on-base streak to a SL best 27 games and swiped his 17th base.....Anthony Giansanti collected a pair of singles.
On the Hill:Pierce Johnson had a solid outing as the right hander threw 94 pitches in six innings. Johnson surrendered three runs on three hits, one a homer. He walked two and fanned eight.......Jose Veras worked a 1-2-3 seventh in his second rehab appearance and got the win.....Armando Rivero recorded his 7th save, tossing the final two innings. He allowed a run on three hits and a walk and fanned two. He threw 34 pitches, 22 for strikes.
Smokies Notes: The Cubs have released RHP Ryan Searle and OF Zeke DeVoss was sent to Daytona. The two moves made room for OF Jorge Soler and RHP Arodys Vizcaino. Searle has re-singed with the Cubs as a minor league free agent and pitched well during the Australian Winter League. But in AA, Searle was 3-1 with a 6.63 ERA in nine games, all in relief. He allowed 22 hits in 19 innings with 9 BB and 17 K. DeVoss has struggled since being promoted to AA, hitting .120 (9-75) in 23 games with 10 BB and 5 SB.
High A—Brevard County 7, Daytona 0
Three Manatee pitchers held the D-Cubs to two hits as Daytona was shutout for the fifth time.
On the Hill: Yao-Lin Wang fell to 0-5 after allowing four runs on four hits and a walk in five innings. Wang fanned two....Ben Wells surrendered three runs over the final three innings on six hits and two walks. Wells got seven ground ball outs of the 16 hitters he faced.
D-Cubs Notes: Zeke DeVoss returned to Daytona from Tennessee and Giuseppe Papaccio was placed on the DL.....Rob Zastryzny has a bone bruise and may not even miss his start, after getting hit with a liner last night and leaving the game. According to Robbie Aaron, D-Cubs broadcaster, the liner was clocked at over 100 mph and hit the left-hander just below the elbow on his throwing arm.
Low A—Kane County 5, Burlington 2—11 innings
Kane County scored three times in the top of the 11th for the extra wining win at Burlington.
At the Dish: David Bote's two-run double in the 11th gave the Cougars the lead and Shawon Dunston added a RBI triple. Dunston went 3-5 and upped his average to ,243.....Yasiel Balaguert had a RBI ground out and Benjamin Carhart stroked a RBI double in the 10th...... Jacob Rogers was 3-5 with two doubles........Bote finished 2-4.
On the Hill: Duane Underwood scattered seven hits and a walk over five innings, holding the Bees to one run with three strikeouts.....Juan Paniagua piggy-backed Underwood's start with four shutout frames. He allowed four hits and fanned five.........Tyler Bremer was unable to hold down the Bees in the bottom of the 10th as the tying run scored on a wild pitch. Bremer did fan the final two hitters of the inning after allowing two hits and a walk....James Pugliese recorded his first save yielding a single to go along with a single.
Cougars Notes: Jen-Ho Tseng (3-0 2.73 ERA) gets the start on Friday night in Burlington.
