Birmingham snapped the Smokies (20-15) four-game winning streak, salvaging the final game of the series.
At the Dish: Smokies were held to just four hits over the first eight innings, with both runs scoring in the second on Rubi Silva's single......They added two more in the ninth and got the tying run to the plate after Charlie Cutler's second hit of the night scored a pair.......John Andreoli walked to lead off the game to extended his on-base streak to 28 games.....Kris Bryant was 0-4 with two strikeouts......Jorge Soler was 1-4 with double in the 9th.
On the Hill: Rough start for Corey Black as he couldn't find the strike zone, walking the first three hitters and then an error by Stephen Bruno allowed two runs to score. A double made it 4-0 before Black fanned the side, throwing 38 pitches in the first. He pitched out of trouble in the third but was at 71 pitches. After an error to start the fourth, Black was taken out of the game. He finished with a line of 3IP, 3H, 5R 3ER, 3BB, 5 K.......LHP Austin Kirk allowed an inherited runner to score in the fourth but finished with a line of 3 IP, 2H 0R, 3BB 2K....Arodys Vizcaino worked a 1-2-3 inning in his second game for Tennessee.....Tony Zych allowed a run on three hits in two innings..
High A—Brevard County 5, Daytona 2
Daytona (10-22) dropped their fifth straight as the offense continues to struggles.
At the Dish: Daytona only had four hits, two coming from Pin-Chief Chen (.255). Albert Almora (.243) and Rock Shoulders (.226) both singled. The D-Cubs got on the board in the third when Shoulders scored on Marco Hernandez double play groundout. Two errors led to Daytona's second run in the fifth.
On the Hill: Felix Pena's hard luck pitching continued Friday night. He was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks. Only one of the runs was earned as an error in the five-run third opened the door for Brevard County. Pena (1-4 1.38 ERA) has not allowed more than one earned run in all seven starts......Daytona's bullpen shut down the Manatees with four scoreless innings......... Austin Reed tossed two frames, allowing a hit and two walks with a strikeout.....Zack Godley was impressive in his Florida State League debut as the right-hander threw two no-hit innings with a walk and three punchouts.
D-Cubs Notes: Jose Rosario (2-2 3.81 ERA) takes the mound on Saturday as the D-Cubs return home and look to end their losing streak.
Low A—Kane County 5, Burlington 2
Jordan Hankins ripped a two-run homer in the top of the 8th to help lead the Cougars to victory.
At the Dish: Jordan Hankins (.300) was 2-3 with a homer and a double and three RBI to lead the offense. Benjamin Carhart doubled in a run the fourth to tie the game at 1-1 and Carlos Penalver added a RBI single in the three-run 8th.......Kane County swiped three bases—Jacob Hannemann (12), Daniel Lockhart (4) and Trey Martin (7).
On the Hill: Jen-Ho Tseng continues to be impressive as he pitches in his first pro season in the MWL. Tseng didn't figure in Friday night's decision but the right-hander tossed 5.2 strong innings, allowing two runs, one on a first inning solo homer. He allowed seven hits, didn't walk a hitter, fanned five and got nine ground ball outs......Gerardo Concepcion (1-1 3.20 ERA) appeared in his 10th game and it was one of his better outings. The left-hander fanned five in 2.1 innings and allowed just one hit.......Nathan Dorris earned his first save despite three walks in the ninth.
Cougars Notes: Paul Blackburn (3-1 3.16 ERA) gets the start on Saturday night in Burlington.
