Hendricks PCL pitcher of week

Kyle Hendricks was named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of thew week May 12-18 for his 11-strikeout win against Round Rock May 15. Hendricks tossed eight shutout innings, limiting the Express to three hits while walking none. The 11 strikeouts tied a career-high, matching his 11K performance back in 2012 with Myrtle Beach.

Hendricks is second in the PCL with 54 strikeouts and is fourth with 50 innings as the right-hander has made eight starts, going 4-3 with a 3.06 ERA. He surrendered six earned runs in his season debut but has only allowed 11 over the past 45.1 frames (2.18 ERA). His 9.7 K/9 is 2K/9 above his career average and his 2.0 BB/9 is slightly above his career mark.

Hendricks joins left-handers Tsuyoshi Wada and Chris Rusin as I-Cubs hurlers earning PCL pitcher of the week honors. Hendricks is schedule to start Tuesday night against Round Rock.

Justin Ruggiano (hamstring) has joined Iowa on a rehab stint and OF Casper Wells has been assigned to Iowa after rehabbing in Mesa after experiencing back spasms in spring training. Marcos Mateo was placed on the DL with a back strain........RHP Jen-Ho Tseng was placed on the DL with what is being called an upper extremity injury. With Nathan Dorris getting promoted to Daytona, Zak Hermans and Corbin Hoffner were added to the Kane County roster and joined the team in Wisconsin.

AAA—Round Rock 4, Iowa 2

Round Rock won the opener of the four-game series, holding Iowa to three hits the final eight innings.

At the Dish: All the Cubs offense came in the first inning as Justin Ruggiano singled and Javier Baez followed with a double. Ruggiano scored on a ground out by Chris Valaika and Baez came home on Josh Vitters' single....Iowa only had three hits the rest of the game, singles by Ruggiano, Vitters and Logan Watkins.

On the Hill: Chris Rusin (2-6 3.91) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned over seven innings. He allowed nine hits and walked on in his 107 pitch effort. He ended the game with five strikeouts and got eight ground ball outs. .....Jeffry Antigua worked a scoreless eighth.

I-Cubs Notes: Carlos Pimentel (1-3 5.23 ERA) get the start in the second game of the series on Tuesday night.

AA—Tennessee 3, Mississippi 1

Tennessee snapped a four-game losing streak as all three runs were knocked home by pinch-hitters.

At the Dish: The offense came through in a the pinch......Kris Bryant delivered a two-out, two-run, double for a 2-1 lead in the fifth. After the first two hitters were retired, Anthony Giansanti and Wes Darvill both singled. Bryant how has 36 RBI, tops in the SL.....Charlie Cutler's pinch-hit sac fly in the seventh scored Jae-Hoon Ha, who singled, took second on a sac bunt by Anthony Giansanti, and went to third on Wes Darvill's single.....John Andreoli was 2-4 while Ha and Darvill both finished with a pair of hits.

On the Hill: Pierce Johnson had his shortest outing of the year based on pitches, as the right-hander only threw 47 pitches, 27 for strikes and left for a pinch-hitter in the fifth. Johnson walked two and fired four no-hit innings with two strikeouts. I'll be interested to see why Johnson came out of the game, although Bryant's double was the difference so you really can't complain with the results. More worried about a possible health issue with Johnson.......Tony Zych allowed a run in his two innings of work on three hits and was credited with the win.....Arodys Vizcaino gave up a two-out double but earned his first hold and hasn't given up a run in five AA innings....Armando Rivero recorded his 8th save, working two no-hit frames with a walk and two punchouts. Both VIzcaino and Rivero were impressive with good movement, not only on their breaking balls, but their fastballs.

Smokies Notes: Kris Bryant didn't start but according to Smokies broadcaster Mick Gillispie, is having problems with his allergies. Later on in the broadcast he said he was sick, so what ever it is, it didn't prevent him from a two-run double........Tennessee has Tuesday off and host Mobile for five games beginning Wednesday.

High A—Daytona 4, Fort Myers 2

Willson Contreras ripped a two-run single in the eighth inning to lead Daytona to the win.

At the Dish: Daytona faced 19-year-old right-hander Jose Berrios, a former first-round pick out of Puerto Rico and a member of the 2013 Puerto Rican World Baseball Classic team......Berrios fanned 10 over seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks.......Daytona got on the board in the first as Pin-Chief Chen walked, took third on Zeke DeVoss' double, and scored on a wild pitch when Albert Almora struckout........Chen delivered in the 7th with a RBI double, scoring Willson Contreras, who singled......two errors in the 8th set the table for Contreras who ripped a two-run single with the bases loaded to provide the difference in the game.......Almora was 2-5 (two singles) to record his sixth straight multi-hit game. He's 13-28 during the streak and has hit in 11 of his last 13 games......Chen was 2-4 with a pair of doubles......Contreras finished with two hits and is 5 for his last 12.

On the Hill: Yao-Lin Wang made his 7th start as he continues to take the ball when asked. He turned in his best outing, holding the Miracle to one hit over five shutout innings. He did walk three and fanned four.......Nathan Dorris got the win in his FSL debut but twice gave up the lead, allowing a run in the 6th and 7th. He walked a pair and fanned two......Austin Reed got the final four outs to earn his second save, coaxing a double play grounder to end the game.

D-Cubs Notes: The D-Cubs fanned 10 times and went down on strikes 45 times in the four-game series.......Daytona heads to Bradenton for a four-game series as Jose Rosier is expected to start as the right-hander has been battling an illness.
