Cubs May 23 Minor League Recap

Yasiel Balaguert had three hits, including a homer for the second straight day, and Tyler Skulina and two relievers blanked Clinton as Kane County continued to be the best team in the MWL. Not such a good night for the rest of the Cubs affiliates as they all lost.

AAA—Colorado Springs 10, Iowa 2

At the Dish: Matt Szczur was the offense as he singled, walked three times and scored both Iowa runs—scoring twice on double plays.....Javier Baez went 1-5 with a single to extend his hitting streak to eight games....Logan Watkins, Chris Valaika and Jonathan Mota all had two hits......Iowa was 0-8 with RISP and left 10 on.

On the Hill: Every I-Cub pitcher was touched for at least one run.....Tsuyoshi Wada allowed nine hits as the left-hander allowed three runs on one walks and five strikeouts. Wada threw 100 pitches, 70 for strikes.......Yoanner Negrin, back from being on loan to the Mexican League, made his first PCL appearance since May 1, surrendering four runs on three hits and two walks....Jeffry Antigua gave up two runs in 1.1 frames and Blake Parker yielded his first run of the year, a solo homer in the 9th,

I-Cubs Notes: Chris Rusin (2-6 3.91 ERA) makes the start for Iowa on Saturday night.

AA—Mobile 7, Tennessee 1

Mobile (29-18) won it second game of the series as Tennessee (25-22) only scored one run on nine hits.

At the Dish: Smokies were just 1-9 with RISP as John Andreoli singled and scored on Kris Bryant's RBI double. The 13th double of the season extended Bryant's hit streak to eight games. Jae-Hoon Ha was 2-4 while Rafael Lopez went 1-4.

On the Hill: Dae-Eun Rhee worked six innings and ended the night allowing four runs on eight hits and thee walks. He fanned one and threw 90 pitches....Tony Zych didn't get much help in his inning as a controversial call at first opened the door for three runs. He surrendered four hits and fanned two....Lendy Castillo fanned one in two scoreless innings.

Smokies Notes: The Smokies have placed RHP Matthew Loosen on the restricted list and added independent league pitchers Joe Gardner and Julio Rodriguez to the roster.

High A—Bradenton 9, Daytona 2

Bradenton scored five times in the first inning and beat Daytona for the second straight night.

At the Dish: Cubs got on the board in the first when Pin-Chieh Chen walked, stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored on Albert Almora's ground out. They added a run in the seventh on Gioskar Amaya's double, plating Jeimer Candelario. The D-Cubs had six hits, two each from Candelario and Daniel Vogelbach.

On the Hill: After striking out a career-high eight sporting new eyewear in his last start, Ben Wells had command issues starting with the the first hitter. He faced nine hitters—gave up two hits, hit a batter, walked three, got two outs and one hitter reached on an error. Wells was charged with five runs, four earned, and threw 34 pitches, 15 for strikes......Nathan Dorris matched a career-high five innings, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk. He fanned two and threw 67 pitches, 42 for strikes.....Stephen Perakslis worked the final 2.2 frames, yielding a two-run homer in the seventh.

D-Cubs Notes: Daytona hosts back-to-back doubleheaders with Clearwater on Saturday and Sunday. No pitchers have been named.....Tayler Scott said in an interview with Robbie Aaron, Daytona Cubs broadcaster, he's fine after getting his with a liner in the forearm and leaving Thursday's start. Scott said he wouldn't miss any time.

Low A—Kane County 7, Clinton 0

Kane County (32-16) made it two straight over Clinton (24-22) as three pitchers combined to blank the Lumberkings.

At the Dish: Kane County pounded Clinton pitching for 11 hits, led by Yasiel Balaguert, who went 3-4 with a homer and two RBI. It was his second straight game with a homer. ......Benjamin Carhart extended his hit streak to eight games with two hits, including his 12th double......Shawon Dunston upped his average to .247 with two hits while Carlos Penalver knocked in two and scored twice.....Jacob Hannemann is getting back on track with a hit in his third straight game, scored once, stole his 14th base, and knocked in a run.....Jacob Rogers and Jordan Hankins both added RBI.

On the Hill: Tyler Skulina didn't equal his no-hit effort his last time out but the right-hander held Clinton scoreless for five innings. He allowed three hits, walked four, and tied a career-high with seven strikeouts.......Michael Wagner tossed one-hit ball for three frames, with no walks and three strikeouts. The Cougars combined for 11 K.....James Pugliese worked the ninth with a walk and a strikeout, getting a double play to end the game.

Cougars Notes: Kane County goes for the sweep on Saturday with Daury Torrez (4-2, 3.77 ERA) getting the start. The Cougars hold a 4.5 game lead over Peoria and are up seven games on Clinton.

Venezuelan Summer League—Rays 4, Cubs 3

The Rays (4-6) scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th, the winning run scoring on one of four Cubs (2-8) errors.

At the Dish: Hennry Pedra and Humberto Garcia were both 2-4 while Johnny Pereda and Luis Hidalgo both knocked in runs. Hidalgo had his eight-game hitting streak end.

On the Hill: Moises Ramirez allowed two earned runs on six hits as he went four innings in the start. Ramirez fanned four....Julio Sanchez took the loss, yielding two runs in the seventh, the winning run scoring on a error on a ground ball to thrid. Sanchez worked three innings allowing five hits and walk with two strikeouts....Jose Leidenz pitched a 1-2-3 8th.
