Cubs July 2 Minor League Recap

Eloy Jimenez smacked his first professional homer at Cubs Park in Mesa in a win that saw the 2014 debut of RHP Dillon Maples. Iowa continues to roll, Pierce Johnson was impressive in his return to AA, and Jesse Hodges launched another bomb in Boise's win.

Roster Moves, News, Notes

Boise made several roster moves as 2014 draft picks Brad Markey (19th round) IF Jason Vols. (16th round) and IF Chesny Young (14th round) have joined the squad. To make room, Varonex Cuevas was sent back to Mesa while IF Zac Blair and OF Oliver Zapata were released. Zapata was signed as a free agent back in 2009 out of the Dominican Republic and started the year at Daytona before being sent to Boise. The 21-year-old spent the previous two years in the MWL with Peoria and Kane County. Blair was the Cubs' 20th round pick last year out of Mercyhurst University and played in 30 games in Mesa after signing and appeared in 10 games with the Hawks this season.........Lots of chatter on twitter through Vanderbilt sources that Dylan Cease, the Cubs 6th round pick, will sign on Thursday for a reported $1.5 million. Better wait and see on that one..........According to's Kiley McDaniel, the Cubs signed Panamanian SS Francisco Garay as the first July 2 prospect of the 2014 class. No financial terms were disclosed but the Cubs cannot spend more than $250,000 on any player as a penalty for going over the their cap limit last year.

AAA—Iowa 4, Omaha 2

The I-Cubs made it four straight over the Storm Chasers as Chris Rusin tossed seven solid innings for Iowa's 50th quality start in 85 games.

At the Dish: Kris Bryant (.345/.419/.764) singled, stole second and scored on Ryan Kalish's (.225/.328/.351) RBI single in the second....Back-to-back doubles by Javier Baez (.240/.307/.433) and Bryant tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth......Arismendy Alcantara (.310/.350/.546) extended his hit streak to 12 games with a single in the first and a RBI triple in the two-run seventh. He scored on Matt Szczur's (.252/.314/.312) double. Bryant was 2-4 and Baez finished 1-3 with a walk. Manny Ramirez was 0-4 with three strikeouts.

On the Hill: Chris Rusin (6-10, 3.96 ERA) scattered eight hits over seven innings as the lefty threw 98 pitches. He allowed two runs, one earned, and fanned three. Marcus Hatley (2-1, 2.48 ERA) allowed a solo homer in the 8th and Blake Parker (0-0, 1.44 ERA) earned his 18th save in the 9th.

AA—Tennessee 7, Montgomery 0

Pierce Johnson threw one-hit ball for over seven innings in his return to AA as the Smokies blanked the Biscuits.

At the Dish: Jae-Hoon Ha (.218/.256/.268) extended his hit streak to 9-games as he went 2-4 with a double and three RBI...Kevin Brown (.500/.500/.688) continues to impress in AA as the 2013 draft pick was 3-4, scored twice, and knocked in a pair with a double......Luis Flores (.261/.292/.435) launched a solo homer and Stephen Bruno (.288/.363/.425) added a RBI.

On the Hill: Pierce Johnson (2-1, 3.44 ERA) pitched into the 8th in his return to Tennessee, holding the Biscuits to one hit and two walks. He fanned five and threw 92 pitches, leaving with one out in the 8th, the longest outing of his career......Andrew McKirahan made his AA debut as he preserved the shutout, working around two hits and two walked in 1.2 innings. McKirahan threw 34 pitches.

Smokies Notes: Eduardo Figueroa (0-0, 5.51 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night at Smokies Park.

High A—Brevard County 4, Daytona 3

Brevard County beat the D-Cubs for the second straight night and opened up a two-game lead over Daytona.

At the Dish: Albert Almora (.266/.292/.357) had two singles, a double, walked once, and scored two times. Daniel Vogelbach (.277/.364/.400) went 1-3 and knocked in two.....Marco Hernandez (.287/.326/.368) was 2-4 and Jordan Hankins (.188/.278/.313) added a RBI single.

On the Hill: Justin Amlung (1-2, 5.48 ERA) worked into the sixth and finished the night with a line of 5 IP, 6H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1BB, 1K.......Starling Peralta (5-2, 3.36 ERA) got charged with a blown save and took the loss allowing an inherited runner to score to tie and the game and then allowed the winning run in the 7th.....Yao-Lin Wang (1-5, 6.12 ERA) tossed a scoreless 8th.

D-Cubs Notes: Nathan Dorris (3-4, 4.54 ERA) gets the ball Thursday night as the series goes back to Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Low A—Peoria 8, Kane County 5

Peoria evened the series as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held on for the win.

At the Dish: Kane County finally got on the board in the sixth with three runs with two outs. David Bote (.211/.326/.306) walked and scored on Jacob Hannemann's (.262/.334/.390) double when the ball got by the centerfielder. Benjamin Carhart (.279/.328/.366) singled in Hannemann, and after a single by Kyle Schwarber (.390/.500/.780), scored on Yasiel Balaguert's (.248/.290/.371) RBI single......Cougars added two runs in the 7th on RBI singles by David Bote and Hannemann.

On the Hill: Tyler Skulina (4-4, 3.0 ERA) didn't make it out of the first inning as he hit the Cubs first frame pitch count and left after only getting two outs. He allowed runs on three hits and a hit batter.....Corbin Hoffner (2-1, 4.63 ERA) gave up three runs on three hits and two walks in 3.1 innings of emergency relief......Gerardo Concepcion (1-1, 4.61 ERA) made his return to Kane County with three innings of relief. He allowed a run on two hits with a strikeout......Michael Heesch (1-0, 3.00 ERA) allowed an unearned run in two innings.

Cougars Notes: Midwest League Pitcher of the Week Daury Torrez (8-3, 3.14 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night.

Short-Season—Boise 8, Tri-City 1

Another big night with the bats for Boise as they knocked out 11 hits in the win.

At the Dish: Jesse Hodges smacked his fourth homer, a two-run shot in the third. It was his third homer in two nights and he finished 2-5.....Mark Zagunis was on base four tiems with two singles and two walks....Mark Malave and Giuseppe Papaccio both had two hit sand combined for three RBI....Jeffrey Baez tripled while Danny Canela and Justin Marra plated runs.

On the Hill: Erick Leal made his fourth start and tossed six solid frames, giving up an unearned run on five hits and a walk. He fanned two and got 10 ground ball outs....Brad Markey, the Cubs 19th round pick, made his MWL debut, tossing two scoreless frames....Josh Davis worked the ninth, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk.

Hawks Notes: Trevor Clifton (1-0, 3.14 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night in the final game of the series.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 6, Padres 4

Eloy Jimenez slugged his first pro homer as the Cubs improved to 7-3.

At the Dish: Only fitting 17-year-old Eloy Jimenez would hit his first pro homer on July 2. Considered the top international prospect last year, Jimenez launched a blast over the left field wall and onto the back of the berm at Cubs Park. He also singled and was the DH.....C Alberto Mineo went 2-4 with a RBI double and Ricardo Marcano scored twice and added two hits.....Ho-young Son was 1-4 with a RBI and Charcer Burks had a single in four trips.....Gleyber Torres scored a run and singled.

On the Hill: Dillon Maples made his 2014 debut, tossing two scoreless innings. According to Ryan Cox, Maples was 92-93 with his fastball, which is about what he was throwing last year when I saw him at Kane County. Maples could get promoted to Kane County. Maples worked out of a second and third one-out jam in the second. He allowed two hits and fanned two......Cubs 11th round pick Jordan Brink made his pro debut working a 1-2-3 third with two punchouts....Adbert Alzolay, one of the top arms in the VSL last year, worked five innings, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts....Carlos Llano earned his first save, surrendering one run in the 9th on two hits.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 4, Rays 3

Cubs (16-26) scored a run in the top of the ninth for their second straight win.

At the Dish: A groundout by Andruw Monasterio (.216/.326/.243) scored Henrry Pedra (.279/.354/.314) with the winning run. Pedra pinch-ran for Roberto Vahlis, (.208/.370/.325) who led off the inning with a walk. Pedra moved to third on a groundout and single by Jose Gonzalez (.208/.272/.240).....Miguel Rico (.248/.341/.383) went 2-3 with a run and a RBI while Gonzales and Monasterio both finished with two hits.....Wladimir Galindo (.296/.377/.532) was 1-2 with a walk.

On the Hill: Enrique De Los Rio (1-2, 3.19 ERA) pitched into the 7th in his 10th start as the Cubs VSL workhorse allowed three runs on seven hits. The 19-year-old fanned four.....Mauro Vides (1-3, 2.39 ERA) got the final out of the seventh and worked a scoreless eight to earn his first professional win.....Eugenio Palma (0-0, 0.90 ERA) got the first two outs of the ninth and Jose Leidenz (2-1, 2.96 ERA) got the final out for his first pro save.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 14, Astros Orange 3

Cubs (20-8) pounded Astros (11-17) pitching for 19 hits in the win, including a homer from catcher Antonio Valerio.

At the Dish: Carlos Jimenez (.349/.383/.472) was 4-5 with two doubles while Yohan Matos (.316/.435/.491) had two hits and knocked in four. Valerio, who just returned from the states, hit a three-run homer. Miguel Ruiz (.268/.348/.378) and Luis Ubiera (.220/.361/.280) both had three hits and two RBI. Franklin Tineo (.200/.291/.267) scored three runs with two singles and two walks. Jose Paniagua (.311/.407/.533) was 2-4 with three runs and a run-scoring triple.

On the Hill: Junior Marte (0-0, 4.05 ERA), a 19-year-old right-hander, made his fourth start and allowed a run in three innings with four strikeouts, the longest outing of his young career....Pedro Silverio (1-1, 1.69 ERA) tossed five innings of one-hit ball with six strikeouts, his best outing of the season......Chris Pieters (1-0, 14.21 ERA) gave up two unearned runs in the ninth.
