Cubs July 19 Minor League Recap

Boise kept pace for first place in the NWL as all nine starters had at least one hit and knocked in a run in the 12-9 win. Boise outfielder Rashad Crawford, a 11th round pick in 2011, extended his hit streak to 19 games. Iowa hit three homers in their win, the Smokies were swept, while Daytona and Kane County lost. Teenager Eloy Jimenez had two RBI in Mesa’s win.

AAA—Iowa 5, Round Rock 4

Iowa hit three homers in a five-run second and hung on for the win.

At the Dish: 1B Chris Valaika (.290) led off the second with his 10th homer, and after two strikeouts, C Eli Whiteside (.178) and SS Logan Watkins (.274) went back-to-back, the 4th homer for both players. After singles by CF Matt Szczur (.246) and RF Brett Jackson (.213), 2B Javier Baez (.247) cleared the bases with a double. Cubs had nine hits, six in the second. Jackson and Valiaka both finished with two hits.

On the Hill: Eric Jokisch (5-8, 4.04 ERA) only lasted four innings, throwing 91 pitches and allowing four runs on six hits. He walked three and fanned four.....Carlos Pimentel (2-6, 4.63 ERA) got the win, tossing three shutout innings with four strikeouts. Marcos Mateo (1-0, 4.07 ERA) struckout the side in the eighth for his second hold and Blake Parker (0-0, 1.33 ERA) set two down on strikes in the ninth for his 20th save.

I-Cubs Notes: I-Cubs broadcaster Randy Wehofer said it was Iowa’s first back-to-back homers since Dave Sappelt and Mike Olt pulled the trick last August in Tacoma.

AA—Game 1—Huntsville 1, Tennessee 0; Game 2—Huntsville 4, Tennessee 0

Huntsville blanked the Smokies in both ends of the doubleheader, limiting Tennessee to seven hits over 14 innings.

At the Dish: GAME 1—Smokies only had four hits in the opener, two from Elliot Soto and one each from Addison Russell and Christian Villanueva. GAME 2—Stephen Bruno had two singles and Soto had a base hit for the Smokies only hits in the second game.

On the Hill: GAME 1—Pierce Johnson (2-4, 3.35 ERA) had a solid outing but took the loss, allowing an unearned run in five innings. He allowed four hits, walked two, and fanned three, throwing 82 pitches, 55 for strikes......Hunter Cervenka fanned two in his scoreless inning of work.......GAME 2—Eduardo Figueroa allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks in 3.1 innings. He fanned four and threw 63 pitches.....Jeffrey Lorick worked 1.2 scoreless innings and Lendy Castillo gave up an unearned run in the sixth.

Smokies Notes: Jeffrey Antigua (0-1, 2.41 ERA) takes the ball on Sunday.

High A—Fort Myers 5, Daytona 3

Fort Myers won the final game of the series to take 3-of-4 from the D-Cubs.

At the Dish: D-Cubs were held to five hits but were able to score three times. 3B Jordan Hankins was 1-4 with two RBI while LF Kyle Schwarber went 1-4 with a RBI single. Albert Almora (.274) and Gioskar Amaya (.280) both doubled.

On the Hill: Taylor Scott (5-7, 4.88 ERA) worked three scoreless frames but gave up two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. The South African allowed eight hits, walked two, and recorded two punchouts......Tyler Bremer had control problems walking in a run in 1.2 innings with four free passes...Jasvir Rakkar got three outs and Starling Peralta retired all four hitters he faced.

D-Cubs Notes: Jasvir Rakkar was sent to Daytona from Boise to help the D-Cubs after Friday night’s 17-inning game........Felix Pena (2-6, 3.32 ERA) gets the start on Sunday as the D-Cubs open up a four-game series at Palm Beach.

Low A—Great Lakes 4, Kane County 2

Great Lakes took the opening game of the series handing Paul Blackburn his first loss since June 8.

At the Dish: Cougars only had six hits and got on the board in the fourth when Benjamin Carhart (.282) doubled and scored on 3B Jeimer Candelario’s RBI single. They added a run in the ninth when they loaded the bases on a hit and two walks and LF Trey Martin (.246) delivered a RBI single. Martin finished with two hits and RF Kevin Brown (.200) walked and scored. 1B Jacob Rogers was 1-3 with a walk.

On the Hill: The Loons got eight hits off Blackburn (8-3, 3.14 ERA), one a two-run homer in the sixth. He worked six innings, gave up four runs, walked one, and only fanned one.....Jose Arias (1-1, 2.20 ERA) tossed two perfect innings retting all six hitter he faced, three on strikes.

Cougars Notes: Tyler Skulina (4-5, 2.93 ERA) is scheduled to get the ball Sunday afternoon at Great Lakes.

Short-Season—Boise 12, Salem-Keizer 9

Boise stayed in a tie for first place by reaching double-figures in runs for the second straight game.

At the Dish: Every starter had at least one hit and knocked in a run as the Hawks pounded Volcano pitching for 16 hits.....3B Jesse Hodges (.282) led the attack with three hits, including his 5th homer, added a triple and scored three times....C Justin Marra (.324) and 2B Chesney Young both had two hits and two RBI while RF Jeffrey Baez (.272) knocked in a pair....CF Rashad Crawford (.321) extended his hit streak to 19-games with a triple.....LF Mark Zagunis (.354), 1B Danny Canela (.303), and DH Alex Tomasovich (.283) all had two hits.

On the Hill: Ben Wells (2-2, 3.86 ERA) went five innings to earn his second win as the right-hander got 11 ground ball outs. He allowed two runs on three hits and walked three.....James Norwood worked two frames, yielding a run on a hit and a walk. David Garner only got two outs, surrendering three runs on three hits and a walk. Sam Wilson got the final out of the eighth but gave up three runs in the ninth..

Hawks Notes: Tyler Ihrig (4-0, 4.37 ERA) gets the start on Sunday night against Salem-Keizer

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 5, Brewers 4

Cubs scored four times in the third and hung on for the victory.

At the Dish: RF Eloy Jimenez (.255) was 1-4 and knocked in a pair in the Cubs third. LF Shamil Ubiera (.231) and Tyler Alamo (.282) were both 1-4 with a RBI. 3B Varonex Cuevas (.533) had two singles and walked twice. All eight of the Cubs hits were singles.

On the Hill: 18th round pick Austyn Willis (0-0, 2.08 ERA) made his first pro start and worked two scoreless frames with two strikeouts. Alex Santana (1-1, 2.20 ERA) earned the win, fanning seven over 3.2 innings while allowing to runs. Luis Hernandez (1-0, 4.30 ERA) tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless ball and Yomar Morel (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 9.2 IP, 3SV) earned the save despite allowing two unearned runs in the ninth.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 4, Tigers 3

Cubs (24-31) survived a ninth inning rally to down the Tigers (37-18).

At the Dish: SS Andruw Monasterio (.281) was 2-4 with two doubles and two runs scored while 1B Miguel Rico (.279) and DH Fidel Matos (.294) had two hits each. Matos knocked in the Cubs only run and C Jhonny Pereda (.244) walked twice.

On the Hill: Yapson Gomez (5-1, 1.58 ERA) allowed an unearned run in six innings as the 21-year-old left-hander fanned three and gave up three hits and a walk. Eugenio Palama (0-1, 2.25 ERA) earned his third hold and despite allowing two runs on four hits, Juan Rengifo (1-0, 4.15 ERA) recorded his first pro save.
