Cubs July 23 Minor League Recap

Good day for winning as Iowa, Tennessee, Daytona, Kane County, Mesa and the DSL Cubs were all victorious. C.J Edwards returned to the mound in his first rehab start, Dae-Eun Rhee recorded his first AAA win, and Rob Zastryzny won for the first time since April 12.

Roster Moves, News, Notes

Lost of moves on Monday. Tsuyoshi Wada to Chicago, Mike Olt, Jorge Soler to AAA Iowa, Manny Ramirez to the DL in Iowa, Lars Anderson from Iowa to Tennessee, Albert Almora from Daytona to Tennessee, Jacob Hannemann from Kane County to Daytona, Jeffrey Baez form Boise to Kane County. More moves to come. I went into more detail about some of the moves in the Cubs Clubhouse .........Tennessee C Taylor Davis has been activated from the DL and Anthony Giansanti was placed on the DL.

AAA—Iowa 13, New Orleans 4

Dae-Eun Rhee won is first AAA game with six solid innings and Iowa’s bats exploded for 11 hits after only one on Tuesday night.

At the Dish: 2B Javier Baez (.253) doubled home two runs in the third to give Iowa the lead for good. He added a single, scored three times, walked twice, and committed his first error in a month and then made one more.....1B Lars Anderson was 2-4 and launched a two-run homer in the 7th, his 4th, and finished with three RBI. 3B Kris Bryant and RF Ryan Kalish both finished the day with three RBI while CF Matt Szczur had two singles.

On the Hill: Dae-Eun Rhee (1-0, 3.46 ERA) was removed from the disabled list on Wednesday and took the mound against New Orleans. The 25-year-old right-hander gave up an unearned run in the first and then shut the Zephyrs down for the next five frames. Rhee eared his first AAA win, throwing 88 pitches, 55 for strikes. He only allowed one hit, walked three and fanned two.....Kyuji Fujikawa made his first AAA rehab appearance, working a 1-2-3 seventh with two punchouts....Carlos Pimentel gave up three runs in the 8th and Marcos Mateo kept New Orleans off the board in the ninth.

AA—Tennessee 6, Mississippi 3

Eduardo Figueroa earned his first AA win of the season while Stephen Bruno and Christian Villanueva knocked in two runs apiece

At the Dish: Smokies offense made the most of their eight hits with Bruno and Villanueva collecting two hits apiece. Jae-Hoon Ha and Taylor Davis also knocked in runs. Tennessee drew nine walks and were 7-for-17 with runners in scoring position.

On the Hill: Eduardo Figueroa allowed a run over five innings and won for the first time in nine starts. Used mostly as a reliever the past two seasons, Figueroa threw 82 pitches and gave up four hits....P.J. Francescon blanked the Braves for two innings for his third hold while Andrew McKirahan struckout the side in the 8th but surrendered a two-run homer. Zach Cates worked the ninth for his first save

High A—Daytona 6, Palm Beach 2

Daniel Vogelbach hit a pair of homers as Daytona and beat the Cardinals for the third time in four games.

At the Dish: Vogelbach’s leadoff solo homer propelled a four-run second as the D-Cubs took control early. The slugging first-baseman smacked his 11th homer in the third, another solo shot, but was 0-3 the rest of the night. Bijan Rademacher, Marco Hernandez and Wes Darvill all knocked in runs. Gioskar Amaya had two hits and Billy McKinney tripled to extend his hit streak to six games and scored twice.

On the Hill: Rob Zastryzny (2-6, 5.00 ERA) won for the first time since April 12 as the left-hander tossed six scoreless frames. He fanned three, walked three and gave up three hits, all singles.......Justin Amlung earned his first save in the FSL, allowing two runs over the final three innings. He set five Cardinals down on strikes and allowed five hits and two walks.

D-Cubs Notes: Tayler Scott (5-7, 4.88 ERA) makes his 20th start as the D-Cubs return home for a four-game series with St. Lucie Mets. Daytona holds a 2.5 game lead over Brevard County for the second half title

Low A—Kane County 5, South Bend 2

Three Kane County (65-36) pitchers held the Silver Hawks (59-41) to four hits in what could be a preview of a Midwest League title match-up.

At the Dish: Cougars collected 11 hits, three from RF Kevin Brown (.316) that knocked two runs. Jeimer Candelario (.248) delivered a two-run single in the third to give the Cougars the lead for good. LF Shawon Dunston (.259) singled in a run and DH Cael Brockmeyer (.320) had two doubles and scored once.

On the Hill: Duane Underwood (5-2, 2.44 ERA) made his 15th start and earned the win, his third in four starts. The hard-throwing right-hander fanned seven and allowed two runs on three hits and two walks. Been a great month for the 20-year-old as he’s 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA with 24 K and only 3 BB in 23 IP.....Gerardo Concepcion (2-2, 3.86 ERA) recorded his second hold, tossing three scoreless innings with three punchouts..... With a scoreless ninth, Jose Arias picked up his third save with a walk and two strikeouts.

Cougars Notes: Jen-Ho Tseng (5-0, 2.50 ERA) makes his 13th start on Thursday night.


Boise was rained out and will play a DH on Friday. Josh Conway gets the start on Thursday.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 10, Rangers 0

Cubs celebrated C.J. Edwards’ return to the mound with a 17-hit attack.

At the Dish: Cubs used a balanced offensive attack to take down the Rangers as Shamil Ubiera (.246) Bryant Flete (.315), Ho-young Son (.292), Roney Alcala (.216), Gleyber Torres (.231), Erick Castillo (.235) and Adonis Paula (.237) all had two hits. Eloy Jimenez (.279) and Paula knocked in two runs apiece.

On the Hill: C.J. Edwards return to action for the first time since going on the DL back in April for shoulder fatigue. The right-hander tossed two scoreless frames with two strikeouts and a walk. He tweeted after the game that he felt good and was anxious for his next outing....Jose Paulino earned his first win of the year with four shutout innings including four punchouts. Tanner Griggs blanked the Rangers for two innings and Yomar Morel threw a scoreless ninth. Cubs pitching held the Rangers to just five hits.

Venezuelan Summer League—Mariners 6, Cubs 5

Cubs scored five times in the fifth but it wasn’t enough as the Mariners scored the game winner in the seventh.

At the Dish: LF Humberto Garcia was 3-4 and plated a pair of runs in the fifth with a double. SS Andruw Monasterio had two hits and scored a run. 1B Miguel Rico knocked in a run but committed his 17th error.

On the Hill: Jesus Arias got the start but only went one inning, allowing a run on two hits and two walks. Harrison Bermudez allowed three runs in the three frames and Ivan Medina gave up a run in two innings. Salvador Jerez took the loss yielding a run in the 7th. Angel Mejias kept the M’s off the board the final two innings.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 8, Astros Orange 5

Cub held a 6-0 lead and hung on for the win.

At the Dish: Cubs pounded Astros pitching for 12 hits, including three from RF Jose Paniagua (.309), who doubled, knocked in a run and scored. SS Carlos Jimenez (.315) and 2B Miguel Ruiz (.246) had two hits apiece while CF Roberto Caro (.274), 1B Antonio Valerio (.217), Jimenez, 3B Richard Nunez (.222) and PH Franklin Tineo (.202) all knocked in runs.

On the Hill: Erling Moreno made his fourth appearance in the DSL, throwing 1.1 innings in the start with two strikeouts.....Santiago Rodriguez (6-0, 0.99 ERA) continues to prove he’s one of the best arms in the DSL as the 20-year-old right-hander tossed 5.2 innings of shutout ball with nine strikeouts. The DSL mid-season all-star has 49 K in 54.2 innings with 10 BB and .213 BAA......Aneuris Rosario gave up three runs in .1 innings while Luiz Escanio earned his third save despite giving up two runs.

Cubs Notes: Santiago Rodriguez got the start for the NL All-Stars tossing a scoreless inning in the NL’s 9-7 win on July 20. Outfielder Roberto Caro singled in a run while SS Carlos Jimenez went 0-4 with a run and a RBI.
