Cubs July 24 Minor League Recap

On a night of debuts, Kane County first baseman Jacob Rogers stole the show collecting three hits and smacking his 11th homer of the year as the Cougars improved to 40-12 at home. Jorge Soler made his AAA debut and Albert Almora played his first AA game. Iowa, Tennessee and Boise all won while Daytona was rained out. DSL Cubs pounded the Astros for 18 runs.

Roster Moves, News, Notes

Second baseman Bryant Flete was promoted from Mesa to Boise......2B Chesny Young, 14th round pick in June, was promoted to Kane County while David Bote was sent back to Boise for the second time this season. Young hit .354/.466/.417 ini 15 games in the NWL after playing two games for Mesa. He become the second 2014 pick to reach Kane County, following Kyle Schwarber, who has since been promoted to Daytona.

AAA—Iowa 11, New Orleans 2

Iowa reached doubled figures in back-to-back games for the first time as 10 different Cubs collected hits in the win.

At the Dish: Jorge Soler looked comfortable at the plate in his AAA debut, reaching three times with a single and two walks. 2B Javier Baez (.255) continues to hit balls hard in July, as he launched his 17th homer, part of a three RBI night. Mike Olt went 2-5 with two runs and three RBI in his first game at Iowa....Josh Vitters (.205) smacked a pinch-hit two run homer while C Rafael Lopez had two RBI. Relief pitcher Armando Rivero even got into the act with his first hit as a pro.

On the Hill: Eric Jokisch (6-8, 4.01 ERA) worked around 10 hits and two walks, surrounding two runs. He threw 100 pitches, 62 for strikes, and had five strikeouts....Armando Rivero (3-0, 1.15 ERA) contains to audition for a spot in the Cub bullpen as the Cuban right-hander fanned three in 1.2 frames of scoreless relief. He has 23 K in 15.2 IP.....Arodys Vizcaino worked 1.2 frames of shutout ball and left after reaching his pitch count (33).....Marcus Hatley came in and got the final out.

I-Cubs Notes: Chris Rusin (7-10, 3.79 ERA) takes the mound on Friday night as the I-Cubs host Memphis for five games, including a pair of double headers.....

AA—Tennessee 4, Mississippi 2

Pierce Johnson tossed six shutout innings with eight strikeouts and Stephen Bruno knocked in a pair for the second straight night.

At the Dish: SS Addison Russell (.236) snapped an 0-for-11 streak with two singles and scored twice. 2B Bruno (.278) delivered a two-run double in the sixth while 1B Lars Anderson went 2-4 with a RBI double in his first game with the Smokies. 3B Christian Villanueva (.263) added a RBI single and CF Albert Almora went 0-4 in his AA debut but made a diving catch in center.

On the Hill: Two singles and three walks is all Pierce Johnson (3-4, 2.98 ERA) gave up in six shutout innings as he tied his season-high with 8 K. The right-hander threw 81 pitches, 53 for strikes.....Tony Zych continued his roller coaster season as he surrendering two runs on two hits and a walk. Jeffrey Lorick allowed an inherited runner to score and got two outs in the 8th for his ninth hold. Frank Batista recorded his 6th save with two strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 0.83.

Smokies Notes: Jeffry Antigua (0-1, 2.78 ERA) makes the start on Friday night.

High A—Daytona

Got rained out and will play a double header with St. Lucie on Friday beginning at 5:05 p.m. EST. Tayler Scott (5-7, 4.88 ERA) and Felix Pena (3-6, 3.16 ERA) are scheduled to start.

Low A—Kane County 5, South Bend 3

Jen-Ho Tseng stayed undefeated as a pro and 1B Jacob Rogers had three hits including his 11th homer.

At the Dish: Rogers (.270) had a RBI single in the first, another single in the third and slugged his 11th homer of the year over the centerfield wall, 400-feet away.... LF Shawon Dunston (.265) had a pair of hits out of the leadoff spot, scored twice, added a RBI, and stole his 13th base. 2B Benjamin Carhart (.282) was 2-4 with two RBI while CF Trey Martin (.245) laced two singles, scored twice, and stole his 21st base.

On the Hill: Not one of his best outings based on the stat line but Jen-Ho Tseng (6-0,2.68 ERA) proved he can win without his best stuff as the Silver Hawks had the leadoff hitter on in four innings. The 19-year-old worked 5.2 frames, surrendering three runs on six hits and two walks with four punchouts....Michael Heesch (2-0, 2.42 ERA) tossed two scoreless frames for his second hold and James Pugliese (3-0, 1.54 ERA) nailed down his third save getting the final four outs.

Cougars Notes: Paul Blackburn (8-3, 3.14 ERA) gets the start on Friday night as the Cougars go for the sweep.

Short-Season—Boise 7, Everett 3

C Justin Marra and 1B Danny Canela homered and Hawks’ pitching fanned 14 AquaSox.

At the Dish: Canela’s (.293) two-run homer in the first gave the Hawks a lead they would never relinquish. Marra (.305) added a two-run shot in the 8th. David Bote (.375) had two hits in his return for Boise while Bryant Flete earned his first NWL hit, going 1-3 with two walks. Charcer Burks went 1-3 with a RBI in his Boise debut while LF Charles White (.204) and DH Mark Zagunis (.330) plated runs.

On the Hill: Josh Conway got the start and went two innings, allowing a run on two hits and three walks with a pair of punchouts. Jasvir Rakkar gave up two runs in three frames while Sam Wilson (3-0, 3.52 ERA) earned the win, tossing two shutout innings with 4 K. Francisco Carrillo held Everett off the board the final two innings and set four down on strikes..

Hawks Notes: Tyler Ihrig (4-1, 4.50 ERA) gets the start on Friday night at Everett.

Arizona Rookie League—A’s 7, Cubs 6

A’s scored six times over the final three innings including a walk-off single in the ninth.

At the Dish: CF Kevonte Mitchell went 2-4, tripled, knocked in a run and walked batting leadoff....Shamil Ubiera had a two-run single while Eloy Jimenez, Gleyber Torres and Ricardo Marcano all added RBI.

On the Hill: Marcelo Carreno made his Cubs debut after being acquired from Detroit in 2012 as the player to be named later for Jeff Baker. He missed all of 2013 after a shoulder injury and finally took the mound on Thursday night. He worked 1.2 frames, allowing a hit and two walks with two strikeouts.....Austyn Willis surrendered a run in 1.1 innings while Jefferson Mejia fanned three in three shutout frames. Jesus Castillo, allowed four runs, two earned, in 1.1 innings while Andin Diaz got charged with the blown save in the 8th and then took the loss as the first three hitters of the ninth all reached.

Venezuelan Summer League—Tigers 3, Cubs 1

Cubs (25-34) only had four hits and the Tigers (40-19) pushed across two runs in the eighth.

At the Dish: SS Andruw Monasterio (.283) went 2-4 with a double and knocked in the Cubs only run. CF Jose Gonzalez (.225) singled and scored and LF Danny Gutierrez (.250) had a base knock.

On the Hill: Yapson Gomez (2-5, 1,68 ERA) tossed 7.1 innings, yielding three runs, two earned, with four hits and four strikeouts.....Juan Rengifo got the final two outs, allowing an inherited

Cubs Notes: Cubs are just 2-6 in last eight games and trail the second place Phillies by six games with nine games left to play.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 18, Astros Orange 3

Cubs blew the game open with 11 runs in the 7th as they pounded Astros’ pitching for 17 hits.

At the Dish: Nine different players had hits but nobody had more than Jose Paniagua as the outfielder went 4-5, including his 4th homer. He scored twice, walked, and knocked in two. SS Carlos Jimenez (.322) collected three hits and smacked his third homer, finishing with 2 RBI. 3B Miguel Ruiz (.260) tripled for one of his three hits, scored three times and knocked in two. 1B Yohan Matos (.298) knocked in three runs while DH Frandy Delarosa (.268) and C Antonio Valerio (.229) both had two RBI.

On the Hill: Andri Rondon went the first five innings, yielding three runs on four hits and three walks with five punchouts. Jeffry Hernandez (2-2, 8.4 ERA) only gave up a single in three scoreless frames while Dilson Vasquez worked a scoreless ninth.
