Cubs Aug. 2 Minor League Recap

It didn’t take long for the newest Cubs to make an impact in the minors as Jonathan Martinez worked five solid innings and Victor Caratini knocked in three runs to lead Kane County to victory. Pitching prospect C.J. Edwards returned to Smokies Park, Iowa lost the series opener at Omaha, and Daytona was no-hit in a game shortened by rain.

AAA—Omaha 6, Iowa 2

The Storm Chasers scored all the runs they would need with a four-run third.

At the Dish: DH Josh Vitters (.205) slugged his 11th homer and C Rafael Lopez (.256) added a RBI single in the 8th for Iowa’s only runs. 2B Javier Baez (.257) was 0-3 with a walk while 3B Kris Bryant (.311) singled, scored, and walked twice. Jorge Soler (.276) didn’t start but flied out as a pinch-hitter in the 8th. RF Matt Szczur was 2-5 and doubled, and 1B Mike Olt (.333) extended his hit streak to seven games with a double.

On the Hill: Dallas Beeler (7-5, 3.70 ERA) surrendered five runs as the Storm Chasers collected three extra base hits including a two-run homer in the third. He worked six innings and threw 95 pitches, 63 for strikes. Zac Rosscup (2-0, 2.55 ERA) worked a scoreless 7th and Marcos Mateo (1-0, 3.68 ERA) gave up a run in the 8th.

I-Cubs Notes: Dae-Eun Rhee (1-0, 2.37 ERA) looks to build on his best season as a pro, making his fourth AAA start on Sunday

AA—Pensacola 2, Tennessee 1

A solo homer by Juan Duran in the 7th was the difference in the game and spoiled the return of C.J. Edwards to Smokies Park.

At the Dish: Tennessee was held to five hits and scored in the first when CF Albert Almora (.227) doubled and came home on 3B Christian Villanueva’s double. 2B Stephen Bruno (.277) added a double while SS Addison Russell and LF Pin-Chieh Chen singled.

On the Hill: C.J. Edwards (1-0, 2.63 ERA) returned to Tennessee on Saturday night, making his first AA start since April 20. With a fastball clocked in the low 90s and a breaking ball in the low 80s, Edwards threw 61 pitches before leaving after his fifth strikeout in the fourth. He allowed a leadoff double in the fourth that eventually score. He walked two and gave up a single...Jeffrey Lorick (2-2, 4.13 ERA) allowed an inherited runner to score and then tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Tony Zych (4-5, 5.44 ERA) surrender the game-winning homer in 1.1 innings and P.J. Francescon (9-6, 3.92 ERA) retired all five hitters he faced.

Smokies Notes: Pierce Johnson (3-4, 2.98 ERA) gets the start Sunday after noon at Smokies Park.

High A—Charlotte 10, Daytona 0

Tyler Skulina’s FSL debut was overshadowed as Charlotte’s Blake Snell no-hit Daytona through six innings as the game was called due to rain.

At the Dish: Gioskar Amaya walked twice and Chadd Krist once—the only base runners for Daytona.

On the Hill: Skulina only lasted one inning as the right-hander allowed three runs. He walked three, gave up a single, hit a batter and threw two wild pitches. Nathan Dorris surrendered seven runs on seven hits in four innings.

D-Cubs Notes:It was the third straight game the D-Cubs have been shutout.

Low A—Kane County 8, Quad Cities 2

Cubs newcomers made an impact as Jonathan Martinez worked five solid innings and catcher Victor Caratini knocked in three.

At the Dish: Caratini didn’t waste any time making an impression with a RBI single in his at-bat and before the night was over, added another RBI single and a run-scoring groundout. LF Shawon Dunston (.279), Benjamin Carhart (.277), Jacob Rogers (.272), and Jeimer Candelario (.248) all had two hits. Daniel Lockhart scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th in Boise on Friday night and went 1-5 with a run and a RBI in his return to Kane County from a DL stint

On the Hill: Martinez (8-5, 3.40 ERA) made his Cubs debut a good one as the 20-year-old right-hander allowed a run on three hits in five innings. He didn’t issue any free passes and fanned two. The stadium gun had Martinez’ fastball in the low 90s and he retired the final nine hitters he faced.....Michael Wagner, Cubs 15th round pick last year out of San Diego, allowed a run in 1.2 innings and Jasvir Rakkar, a 2012 draft pick, got the final five outs, four on strikes.

Cougars Notes: Kane County goes for the sweep on Sunday as Daury Torrez (9-5, 2.85 ERA) gets the start.

Short-Season—Vancouver 5, Boise 4—10 innings

Boise couldn’t win their second straight in extras as a bases loaded walked proved to be the difference.

At the Dish: C Justin Marra (.291) slugged a three-run homer, his 7th, to tie the game in the seventh. DH Mark Zagunis (.310) doubled home a run in the fourth, and drew a walk. 1B Danny Canela (.310), 2B Jason Vosler (.313) and SS Bryant Flete (.308) all had two hits.

On the Hill: The Canadians were able to turn nine hits into three runs off right-hander Erick Leal (3-2, 5.03 ERA) in his ninth start. He worked five innings, fanned three, and gave up two homers. Jeremy Null made his NWL debut allowing a run on two hits in the sixth. Alberto Diaz (0-2, 6.39 ERA) worked a season-high 3.1 innings and fanned four but hit two batters in the 10th to load the bases.......Trey Lang walked the first batter he faced in the 10th with the bases full to force in the winning run. Lang got the next batter to hit into a double play.

Hawks Notes: Trevor Clifton (2-2, 4.46 ERA) makes his 8th start on Sunday afternoon. The 19-year-old right-hander has experienced command issues the past two games, walking four each outing, while allowing 10 runs in 7.1 innings..

Arizona Rookie League—Giants 7, Cubs 3

Giants collected 15 hits off Cubs pitching in the win.

At the Dish: Eloy Jimenez put the Cubs on the board in the first with a sac fly, scoring Kevonte Mitchell, who singled, stole second (8), and took third on a ground ball. Mitchell added a RBI single in the third, plating Ricardo Marcano, who singled and stole second (2). Cubs final run came in the 8th when Gleyber Torres singled and scored on a Jimenez double.

On the Hill: Alex Santana got the start and allowed two runs on four hits in four innings. The 20-year-old righty has spent the past two season in Mesa....Tanner Griggs, Cubs 12th round pick in June, allowed three runs on six hits in two innings....Jordan Minch made his pro debut but gave up two runs on three hits with a strikeout in2/3 of an inning. Zach Hedges (1-0, 1.64 ERA) worked the final 2.1 frames, allowing two hits and a walk while coaxing six ground ball outs.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 6, Mariners 5

Leonardo Gonzalez doubled home Jose Gonzalez in the 8th to provide the difference in the game.

At the Dish: 3B Wladimir Galindo (.273) snapped a 1-for-18 streak with three hits and a RBI while 1B Leonardo Gonzalez (.145) added a single, walked, scored and knocked two in. CF Jose Gonzalez (.235) singled, knocked in a run, and scored twice.

On the Hill: Cubs used five pitchers as Carlos Rodriguez (0-3, 1.18 ERA) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk over five innings. The 19-year-old left-hander has made nine starts with 54 K in 53.1 innings and only 4 BB. Rodriguez spent last year in Mesa (1-4, 6.97 ERA, 31 IP, 15 BB, 30 K).....Ramon Valera (1 IP, 1 R) and Ivan Medina (.1 IP, 2 R) both got credit for a hold. Alex Pacheco (1-1, 3.38 ERA) was charged with a blown save, allowing two inherited runners to score, but got the win. Jesus Arias picked up his fifth save with two scoreless frames.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 4, Pirates 3

Cubs rallied with two runs in the 7th and added two more in the 8th to down the Pirates.

At the Dish: Cubs had 10 hits as eight of the nine starters had base knocks. Frandy Delarosa was 2-3 with a RBI while Robert Garcia, Miguel Ruiz and Erick Gonzalez all plated runs. Jenner Emeterio was 2-2 with two walks and a run.

On the Hill: Jose Morel got the start and allowed two runs on five hits and three walks over five innings. Aneuris Rosario (1-5, 3.73 ERA) earned his first pro win with four strikeouts in three innings and Luiz Escanio recorded his fifth save despite allowing a run in the ninth.
