Daytona relief pitcher Tyler Bremer was sent back to Kane County and Cougars’ reliever Zak Hermans was assigned to Boise. Bremer had 10 save for Kane County before being promoted to Daytona on June 30. He pitched in eight games for the D-Cubs (0-1, 4.70 ERA, 15.1 IP, 7 BB, 12 K). Hermans appeared in 15 games for the Cougars (2-3, 3.94 ERA, 29.2 IP, 13 BB, 28 K) and also made a start at AAA Iowa, allowing two runs in 3.1 innings in the second game of a doubleheader.
AAA—Omaha 7, Iowa 5
Javier Baez hit a pair of homers but it wasn’t enough as Omaha hit three balls out of the park.
At the Dish: Javier Baez (.260) slugged a pair of homers, walked twice, and scored three times as the 21-year-old has 23 long balls and 80 RBI on the season. Josh Vitters had three hits while Matt Szczur went 2-5. Jorge Soler added a two-run double and Rafael Lopez stroked a RBI single. Kris Bryant doubled and scored as every Iowa starter had a hit.
On the Hill: Dae-Eun Rhee (1-1, 4.50 ERA) got roughed up for seven runs as the right-hander allowed 10 hits and a walk over five innings. He fanned four but surrendered three homers in the 99-pitch effort. Arodys Vizcaino had his fifth straight outing without allowing a run, tossing a scoreless sixth. Armando Rivero lowered his ERA below 1 with three strikeouts in two shutout innings
I-Cubs Notes: Eric Jokisch (7-8, 3.80 ERA) looks to snap Iowa’s skid when he takes the mound on Monday night.
AA—Tennessee 4, Pensacola 1
At the Dish: SS Addison Russell (.293) gave the Smokies a 2-0 lead in the first with a booming two-run homer, his 8th since joining the Cubs organization. Russell also walked and scored on Lars Anderson’s two-run double in the sixth. Smokies were held to four hits on the day and scored all four runs off Reds top pitching prospect Robert Stephenson. In 25 games since being traded by Oakland, Russell is hitting .293/.333/.566 with 8 HR and 18 RBI.
On the Hill: RH Pierce Johnson (4-4, 2.71 ERA) is making a push to AAA the final month of the season as he held the Lookouts without a hit for five innings and finished with a line of 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6K. He only needed 75 pitches, 52 for strikes, and got eight ground ball outs. A one-out walk in the second was quickly erased with a pick-off and Johnson then retired the next 12 batters before a two-out single in the sixth. Johnson was dominate in July sporting a 1.87 ERA in 33.2 innings with 35 K and .188 BAA......LH Andrew McKirahan kept the shutout in tact for two innings and RH Frank Batista gave up a run in the ninth.
Smokies Notes: Eduardo Figueroa (2-1, 4.53 ERA) gets the start on Monday night.
High A—Daytona, Charlotte—Suspended in 1st
After the D-Cubs were retired in order and leadoff double in the bottom of the first, the game was suspended due to rain after playing for seven minutes. The game will be completed tomorrow as a nine-inning game and then a 7-inning game will follow.
Low A—Kane County 9, Quad Cities 5
At the Dish: Kane County’s bats pounded Quad Cities pitched for 17 hits, led by Brockmeyer’s 3-5, two run, two RBI day. Daniel Lockhart (.276/.338/.331) and Chesny Young (.375/.394/.500) were both 3- 4 and scored twice. Victor Caratini (4-9) went 2-5 with a RBI in his second game while Jeffrey Baez (.258/.273/.452) and Trey Martin (.253/.295/.310) had two RBI each. Every starter had at least one hit.
On the Hill: Daury Torrez (10-5, 2.94 ERA) became the first Kane County pitcher since Dan Straily in 2010 to win 10 games as the 21-year-old right-hander allowed three runs in six innings. He fanned six, walked one and surrendered five hits, two leaving the yard. Torrez has thrown 116 innings in his first full season......David Garner (0-0, 3.00 ERA) allowed a solo homer in two innings in his second MWL game. Garner was the Cubs 7th round pick last year out of Michigan State.....Francisco Carrillo made his MWL debut as the 24-year-old right-hander out of Venezuela allowed a run on two hits in the ninth. Carrillo made his stateside debut for Boise, pitching in 14 games (1-2, 2-42 ERA) before being promoted.
Cougars Notes: Duane Underwood (5-3, 2.52 ERA) gets the ball on Monday night as the Cougars head to Peoria to face the Cardinals affiliate......Shawon Dunston, who went 1-3 with a walk and a RBI in the win, was tagged out on the hidden ball trick. Here’s what he said about it on twitter “Today, I got out on a hidden ball trick. Speechless.”
Short-Season—Boise 3, Vancouver 2
At the Dish: Bote (.328) hit a solo homer (2) in the third and added a RBI single in the first. Rashad Crawford (.276) had two singles and scored twice. Mark Zagunis (.310) continues to string together good at-bats, going 1-3 with a walk to up his OBP to .440. Danny Canela (.310) was 1-3 with a RBI while Mark Malave (.296) doubled and Bryant Flete (.310) singled.
On the Hill: Trevor Clifton (3-2, 3.95 ERA) had his best outing since early July as the 19-year-old right-hander allowed one hit and two walks over five shutout innings. He fanned six and threw a wild pitch....After not giving up a run in his first seven innings (3 games), Tommy Thorps, the Cubs 8th round pick in June, surrendered a pair of runs as he had command issues with his fastball. The left-hander allowed two hits and three walks in two innings. Brad Markey, the Cubs 19th round pick out of Virginia Tech, nailed down his second save, fanning four in two scoreless frames.
Hawks Notes: Hawks have the day off on Monday and Tuesday is the Northwest League All-Star game in Eugene. Six Hawks have been selected to play in the Northwest League All-Star game—catcher Justin Marra (.285/.362/.528, 7 HR 31 RBI) and outfielder Rashad Crawford (.276/.306/.367, 23 RBI, 21 SB) will start for the South team. Jeffrey Baez (.267/.341/.460, 7 HR, 30 RBI) was selected to start in the game but has been promoted to Kane County. Pitcher Trevor Clifton (3-2, 3.95 ERA, 43.1 IP, 23 BB 42 K, 1.43 WHIP), first baseman Danny Canela (.310/.366/.466, 5 HR, 32 RBI) and catcher Mark Zagunis (.310/.440/.426, 1 HR, 19 RBI) were named as all-star reserves.
Arizona Rookie League—Cubs
Cubs got rained out and second-round pick Jake Stinnett’s pro debut was put on hold.
Venezuelan Summer League—Tigers 4, Cubs 3
Tigers (44-23) scored three runs in the sixth to down the Cubs (28-40) in the final game of the season
At the Dish: SS Andruw Monasterio (.292) was 2-4 and scored a run while 3B Wladimir Galindo (.278) had two singles and a walk. Leonardo Gonzalez had the Cubs only RBI while Danny Gutierrez went 1-4 with a run.
On the Hill: Enrique De Los Rio (2-5, 3.76 ERA) worked four shutout innings but gave up a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. He finished with a line of 5.2 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K......Yeiper Lovera worked 1.1 innings of shutout ball and Salvador Jerez pitched a 1-2-3 eighth.
