Cubs Aug. 7 Minor League Recap

Daytona broke out of their scoring drought with 18 runs as Kyle Schwarber, Daniel Vogelbach and Rock Shoulders all slugged homers. Tanner Griggs recorded his first win as a pro in Mesa’s victory while Iowa, Kane County and Boise all lost.

AAA—Oklahoma City 16, Iowa 4

The RedHawks collected 19 hits off Iowa pitching, scoring in six different innings.

At the Dish: Cubs offense came on a two-run homer (2) by Manny Ramirez in the fourth and a Kris Bryant two-run blast in the sixth. It was Bryant’s 15th in AAA, and 37th of the year, tied for the minors lead. Jorge Soler was 1-3 with a walk as Iowa only had five hits, two from Ramirez.

On the Hill: Not a good night for Iowa pitching. Carlos Pimentel (3-8, 5.23 ERA) got rocked for nine runs on 14 hits in five innings. Yoanner Negrin (3 R, 2 H, 2 BB), Marcus Hatley ( 1 R, 1 H, 2 BB) and Marcos Mateo (3 R, 2H 1 BB) all pitched an inning.

I-Cubs Notes: Dallas Beeler (7-5, 3.70 ERA) looks to get Iowa back on track on Friday night.


AA—Tennessee

Game at Mobile was rained out and will be made up as a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. EST.


High A—Daytona 18, Clearwater 2

After being blanked in four of their last 5 games, Daytona broke out in a big way with 14 hits (3 homers) and 12 walks.

At the Dish: Every starter knocked in at least one run and they all scored at least twice except Gioskar Amaya. First-round pick Kyle Schwarber slugged his third homer, knocked in three runs, scored three times and walked twice. Daniel Vogelbach swatted a three-run homer (13) and Rock Shoulders went 2-4 with a solo homer (10). Billy McKinney was 3-4 and drove in a run while leadoff hitter Jacob Hannemann had three singles and plated a pair. Jordan Hankins drew three walks.

On the Hill: A two-run homer in the fifth were the only runs Tayler Scott (7-8, 4.38 ERA) allowed over seven innings. The South African gave up four hits and fanned seven in his 22nd start.....Gerardo Concepcion made his second FLS appearance and first since July 30. The left-hander worked a 1-2-3 eighth and Starling Peralta retired the side in order in the ninth.


Low A—Cedar Rapids 4, Kane County 3—11 innings

A walk-off double gave the Kernals the win in extras.

At the Dish: Cougars grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Shawon Dunston (.280) led off with a triple and scored on Chesny Young’s RBI double. Victor Caratini (.263) followed with a triple for the lead. Caratini added a RBI groundout to score Dunston in the 6th. Young (.409) finished with two hits.

On the Hill: Duane Underwood (5-4, 2.64 ERA) has established himself as one of the Cubs top pitching prospects. The 20-year-old right-hander throws in the mid-90s but his improved command and maturity have led to a impressive first full season. The Georgia native fanned seven over six innings, allowing a run on four hits and a walk........David Garner got charged with his first blown save, allowing two runs in the bottom of the 8th. Jasvir Rakkar kept the Kernals off the board for 2.1 innings and Francisco Carrillo didn’t retire either hitter he faced in the 11th.

Cougars Notes: Jonathan Martinez (8-5, 3.40 ERA) will make his second start for Kane County on Friday night


Short-Season—Salem-Keizer 9, Boise 5

Boise used a season-high six pitchers in the loss and tied a season-high at the plate with 14 strikeouts.

At the Dish: C Mark Zagunis (.308) clubbed his second career homer, a two-run shot in the seventh. 2B David Bote (.347) went 3-5 and scored twice while SS Bryant Flete (.326) was 2-4 with a RBI. DH Mark Malave (.298) plated the Hawks final run.

On the Hill: Josh Conway (0-1, 2.92 ERA, 24.2 IP, .221 BAA) suffered his first loss as a pro, allowing two runs, one earned in 2.1 innings. He fanned two, walked one and allowed three hits. The Cubs have to be pleased with Conway’s performance this summer as the recovers from two surgeries. Ryan William gave up two runs in 2.2 innings and James Farris allowed two runs in the sixth. Daniel Lewis tossed a scoreless frame, Trey Lang yielded three runs in .2 innings, and Alberto Diaz got the final out in the 8th.

Hawks Notes: Trevor Graham (3-3, 5.50 ERA) gets the ball on Friday night vs. Salem-Keizer.


Arizona Rookie League—Game 1—Padres 5, Cubs 3, Completion of suspended game from July 3; Game 2—Cubs 4, Padres 1

12th round pick Tanner Griggs recorded his first pro win as the Cubs salvaged a split after losing a suspended game from July 3.

At the Dish: GAME 1—Cubs only scored one run after the game resumed (trailing 5-2) as Varonex Cuevas doubled and scored on Tyler Pearson’s RBI groundout. Cuevas was 2-2 and Kevonte Mitchell had two hits. GAME 2—CF Kevonte Mitchell (.333) led an 11-hit attack with three singles. 2B Andrew Ely (.351) doubled, added a single, scored and knocked in a run. LF Ricardo Marcano (.280) had two hits while Alberto Mineo (.275) and C Erick Castillo (.229) added RBI.

On the Hill:GAME 1—Fourth-round pick Justin Steele tossed three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. The 19-year-old has allowed one earned run in 12 innings. Austyn Willis worked two scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 1.86 in 9.2 innings.......GAME 2— Carson Sands, Cubs fifth round pick in June, got the start and tossed 2.2 scoreless innings. The left-hander has 11 K in 10 IP and a .229 BAA. Tanner Griggs recorded his first pro win with 5 K in 2.1 no-hit innings. The only batter that reached was hit by a pitch. LHP Jordan Minch, the Cubs 35th round pick from Purdue, notched his first pro save, despite allowing a solo homer in two innings. He fanned four.


Dominican Summer League—Cubs 4, Tigers 3

Cubs (37-21) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and hung on for the victory.

At the Dish: Jenner Emeterio’s single in the sixth led to two runs and he also added a RBI grounder the first. Frandy Delarosa had two of the Cubs five hits and scored twice. Yohan Matos was 1-3, scored and knocked in run.

On the Hill: Pedro Silverio (3-1, 2.45 ERA) made his sixth start and allowed two runs over five innings. The 20-year-old right-hander has 41 K in 55 IP. Deibi Torrez (1-3, 4.91) got the win in relief and Luiz Escanio tossed two scoreless frames for his 6th save.
