AAA—Salt Lake 7, Iowa 5
Iowa’s playoff hopes are moving in the wrong direction as the I-Cubs dropped their fourth straight.
At the Dish: Logan Watkins (.257) led the offense with with two doubles, one clearing the bases and driving in three in the four-run second. Ryan Kalish delivered three hits and Rafael Lopez went 2-for-3. They were the only three I-Cubs to collect hits......Kris Bryant (.306) pinch hit in the 8th and walked. He was then pinch-ran for as he recovers from his a bruise on his foot. Mike Olt (.301) went 0-4 with four strikeouts.
On the Hill: Chris Rusin (7-13, 4.12 ERA) surrendered a pair of homers and six runs over 6.1 innings. He allowed nine hits, walked three and fanned two in the 93-pitch outing. Alberto Cabrera allowed a run in 1.2 innings and Marcus Hatley tossed a scoreless ninth.
I-Cubs Notes: Dallas Beeler (8-5, 3.80 ERA) is scheduled to start on Tuesday.
AA—Tennessee 7, Montgomery 1
Addison Russell slugged his ninth homer as Tennessee ran its win streak to six.
At the Dish: Russell’s two-run blast in the 8th highlighted a five-run frame to put the game away. The Smokies shortstop doubled and scored twice and is hitting .297/.346/.534 in 38 games. Albert Almora (.236) stayed hot going 2-for-5 and is batting .306 over his last 10 games. Lars Anderson (.338), Christina Villanueva (.246) and Charlie Cutler (.308) all had two hits in the win.
On the Hill: Corey Black (6-7, 3.06 ERA) only gave up a solo homer over five innings as he earned the win. In his 84-pitch outing, Black allowed six hits, walked two, hit three batters and fanned four......Four Smokies relievers closed out the win—P.J. Francescon (.2 IP, 1 H 1 BB), Hunter Cervenka (.2 IP, 1 BB, 1 K), Blake Cooper (1.2 IP, 1 BB 3 K) and Andrew McKirahan (1 IP, 1 H, 1 K)
Smokies Notes: C.J. Edwards (1-1, 2.65 ERA) is scheduled to makes his fourth start since coming back from the DL and looks to build on his six innings of shutout ball vs. Huntsville on Aug. 14.
High A—Clearwater, Daytona
Low A—Kane County 2, Burlington 1
Kane County clinched home field advantage for the playoffs as Shawon Dunston delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th for the Cougars 8th straight win.
At the Dish: With his dad watching in the stands, Shawon Dunston (.284) scored the first run and delivered the walk-off winner. Dunston was hit by a pitch in the third, took second on a ground out, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on the play when the catcher’s throw went into left field. In the bottom of the 10th, Trey Martin walked, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on Dunston’s grounder to left field. The 21-year-old also gunned down a runner trying to score in the first. Jacob Rogers (.264) and Dunston had two hits as the Cougars only had six base knocks.
On the Hill: Jen-Ho Tseng (6-1, 2.45 ERA, 0.90 WHIP) made his 16th start and it was similar to the previous 15. The Taiwanese 19-year-old allowed a solo homer over six innings, one of four hits. He didn’t issue a free pass and fanned five. Tseng may grab Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Year award with 99 IP, 15 BB, 83 K, and a WHIP below 1.0......After starting the season on the DL, Michael Heesch has been effective out of the bullpen in his 20 appearances—44 K and 19 BB in 33.2 IP. The left-hander went 2.1 no-hit frames with two walks and four punchouts....Jasvir Rakkar (2-0, 0.00 ERA) got the win, working the final 1.2 innings without allowing a hit.
Cougars Notes: Kane County looks to make it nine straight as they send Paul Blackburn (9-4, 3,34 ERA) to the mound.
Short-Season—Salem-Keizer 7, Boise 3
Boise scored the first three runs of the game but Salem-Keizer avoided the sweep with the comeback win.
At the Dish: Boise took the lead in the third with a RBI single by Charcer Burks (.316) and a two-run homer by Kevin Brown (.265), his second straight game with a long ball and third of the season. Burks finished with three hits, including a triple. Justin Marra (.287) had two singles and Bryant Flete (.301) added a double.
On the Hill: Trevor Clifton (3-2, 4.41 ERA) gave up two runs on six hits, including a homer, and walked three in four innings. Ryan McNeil (0-5, 10.13) made his first appearance in a month, allowing two runs and taking the loss. Trey Lang (2-0, 3.27 ERA) allowed three runs, one earned, over the final three frames.
Hawks Notes: Hawks head to Vancouver for a five-game series with Josh Conway (0-1, 2,60 ERA) getting the start on Tuesday night.
Arizona Rookie League—White Sox 4, Cubs 1
Cubs only had four hits in the loss and went 0-for-11 with RISP.
At the Dish: White Sox pitching held the Cubs to just four hits as the only run of the night came in the 7th when Alberto Mineo (.261) walked and scored on Adonis Paula’s double, one of two hits for the 20-year-old (.265). Eloy Jimenez (.238) and Ricardo Marcano (.269) both singled.
On the Hill: Adbert Alzolay (2-3, 8.02) only went one inning, giving up a run and taking the loss. Jesus Castillo worked three scoreless frames while 2014 draft picks Jordan Hinch and Zach Hedges both tossed two innings.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 11, Mets 4
Cubs scored four times in the first and collected 16 hits in the win.
At the Dish: Big game for Jose Paniagua (.316) as the first baseman had three hits, scored twice, and knocked in three. 2B Frandy Delarosa (.278) had two hits and three RBI. Roberto Caro (.289) ripped three singles and scored twice while Erick Gonzalez (.231) was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Robert Garcia (.318) and Jenner Emeterio (.308) had two hits each.
