Cubs Aug. 24 Minor League Recap

Kyle Schwarber homered for the fifth straight game with a pair of blasts to lead Daytona to their fifth straight win. Addison Russell, Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler all went deep on Sunday.

AAA— Tacoma 5, Iowa 4—14 innings

Cubs dropped their 10th game in 11 tries despite homers from Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler, and another quality start from Dallas Beeler.

At the Dish: Iowa did their damage early with the long ball with Kris Bryant launching his minor league-leading 43rd homer of the season in the first. Jorge Soler hit a solo blast in the fourth and also delivered a RBI single in the 14th to give Iowa the lead. Soler, Rafael Lopez and Eli Whiteside all finished with three hits. Cubs fanned 19 times and walked four, two from Soler.

On the Hill: Dallas Beeler made it 15 straight starts of six innings or more as the right-hander blanked the Rainiers for six frames. In his 98-pitch outing, Beeler allowed five hits and fanned six. Marcus Hatley surrendered a pair of homers as Tacoma tied the game in the seventh. The I-Cubs bullpen kept the home team off the board the next 6 innings—Yoanner Negrin (2 IP) Carlos Pimentel (3 IP) Jeffry Antigua (1 IP). In the bottom of the 14th Blake Parker got charged with his second blown save and was handed his first loss as three walks, a base hit, and a sac fly ended the game.

I-Cubs Notes: Eric Jokisch (9-10, 3.63 ERA) gets the start on Monday night in Tacoma..........Cubs have reinstated Brian Schlitter from the DL and optioned him to Iowa.


AA—Jacksonville 9, Tennessee 7

Jacksonville scored six times in the fifth and hung on for the win. The Smokies cling to a one-game lead over Chattanooga.

At the Dish: SS Addison Russell slugged a two-run homer in the 9th, his 12 since the trade. Russell also added a RBI single and is hitting .297/.339/.560 in 44 games for Tennessee.....Pin-Chieh Chen (.233) had a season-high four hits, stole a base and scored three times. 1B Lars Anderson (.347) had three hits and a RBI while 2B Stephen Bruno (.277) was 2-5 with two knocked in.

On the Hill: Felix Doubront (0-1, 6.23 ERA) allowed four runs over 4.1 innings on five hits, three walks, and five punchouts. It was his third start since the trade with Boston and he’s allowed 17 hits and nine earned runs in 14.1 innings. Zach Cates (2-1, 6.23 ERA) didn’t retire any of the five hitters he faced in the fifth, allowing three walks, a hit and a hit batter—four of them scoring. Tony Zych (4-5, 5.21 ERA) allowed a run in 2.1 innings and Frank Batista (4-1, 1.25 ERA) kept the Suns off the board the final two frames.

Smokies Notes: Tennessee looks to end the skid and sends C.J Edwards to the mound for Monday night’s tilt with Jacksonville.


High A—Daytona 7, Lakeland 1

Kyle Schwarber slugged two more homers as the D-Cubs moved closer to clinching the second half with their fifth straight win. Daytona holds a 2.5 game lead over Tampa.

At the Dish: Kyle Schwarber is the hottest hitter in baseball. After hitting homers in four straight games, the Cubs first-round pick made it five-in-a-row in with some flair, knocking two out of the ball yard on Sunday. Schwarber extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two-run homer in the first and then added a solo shot in the 6th, his 10th in Daytona and 18th on the season. The 21-year-old is hitting .487 hits last 10 games with 7 HR, 13 RBI, 12 runs and 19 hits. In 67 games since being drafted, the University of Indiana product is hitting .354/.444/.671 with 18 homers, 52 RBI, and 53 runs......Billy McKinney continues to impress at Daytona as the right-fielder went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Benjamin Carhart, Rock Shoulders and Jacob Hannemann all knocked in runs.

On the Hill: Tayler Scott (8-8, 4.26 ERA) gave up a solo homer over five innings on four hits and two walks, he fanned three and got four ground ball outs......Jose Rosario (5-8, 5.45 ERA) worked around three hits and a walk in 1.2 innings and Gerardo Concepcion (1-0, 1.29 ERA) fanned three in 2.1 shutout innings.

D-Cubs Notes: Cubs head to Dunedin for a three-game series and then head home for a showdown for Tampa to decide the second half champ. Yao-Ling Wang gets the start against the Blue Jays Monday night.


Low A—Burlington 2, Kane County 1

Burlington snapped Kane County’s 13-game winning streak coming out on top in the pitcher’s dual.

At the Dish: Cougars were blanked over the first eight innings but 2B Daniel Lockhart (285) reached on an infield singled and scored on SS Carlos Penalver’s double. Penalver (.214) had two hits while LF Shawon Dunston (.273), C Mark Zagunis (.292) and 3B Chesny Young (.333) all singled.

On the Hill: An error by Penalver to lead off the fifth led to two earned runs off Daury Torrez (11-6, 2.71 ERA). He allowed two hits, walked one and fanned five in five innings. David Garner (1-0, 3.38 ERA) tossed three shutout frames.

Cougars Notes: Paul Blackburn (9-4, 3.27 ERA) gets the start on Monday night at Burlington.


Short-Season—Boise

Had the day off.


Arizona Rookie League—Angels 5, Cubs 1

Three Angel pitchers held the Cubs to just two hits, both coming in the fifth.

At the Dish: Not much offense as the Cubs were held to two hits, a triple by Varonex Cuevas and a RBI single from Tyler Alamo in the fifth.

On the Hill: Cubs 11th round pick Jordan Brink made his first appearance since July 2, getting the start and working a scoreless first. Adbert Alzolay (2-4, 7.71 ERA) took the loss, allowing a run in two innings. Jesus Castillo gave up two runs in three frames and Andin Diaz surrendered a pair of runs in two innings.


Dominican Summer League—Cubs

Season had ended and the Cubs final two games rained out with Pirates will not be made up.
