AAA—Iowa 5, Oklahoma City 4
Elliot Soto’s walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th kept Iowa’s playoff hopes alive.
At the Dish: Andre Ely led off the 11th with a single and took second on ja-Hoon Ha’s sacrifice bunt. David Bote pinch-ran for Ely and scored on Soto base hit down the right field line. Cubs scored three times in the fifth on a RBI by Ha and an error by former Cubs farmhand Ronald Torreyes that allowed two runs to score.
On the Hill: Chris Rusin only lasted four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, including a pair of homers. Yoanner Negrin tossed three scoreless frames despite allowing four hits and three walks. Arodys Vizcaino threw a scoreless e8th and Brian Schillter got charged with a blown save allowing an unearned run in the ninth. Carlos Pimentel picked up the win blanking the Redhawks the final two innings. Junior Lake and Jonathan Mota had two hits each and Ely had a sac fly.
I-Cubs Notes: Dallas Beeler (8-6, 3.61 ERA) gets the ball on Saturday.
AA—Tennessee 6, Chattanooga 5
The Smokies moved back into a first-place tie with Chattanooga as Anthony Giansanti homered and delivered the game-winning single in the fifth.
At the Dish: 2B Anthony Giansanti (.239) made the most of his two hits, a solo homer in the third off former Cubs prospect Nick Struck and a RBI single in the fifth that proved to be the difference in the game. 3B Christian Villanueva (.246) had two doubles, knocked in a pair and scored twice. LF Pin-Chief Chen (.236) and 1B Lars Anderson (.316) both doubled and scored. SS Addison Russell (.293) went 1-for-5 and knocked in a run.
On the Hill: Starter Corey Black (3.47 ERA) only lasted three innings, allowing five runs on six hits, including a pair of homers. He walked two and fanned two in the 63-pitch outing. The Smokies bullpen shutdown the Lookouts with six scoreless fames. Matt Loosen went 1.1 innings and Hunter Cervenka (4-4, 3.79 ERA) got the win with 1.2 innings. Blake Cooper (1 IP), Frank Batista (1.2 IP) and Andrew McKirahan (2.93 ERA) got the final out for his second save.
High A—Daytona 8, Tampa 4
At the Dish: Daytona pounded Tampa pitching for 11 hits as SS Marcos Hernandez (.270) led the charge going 2-for-3 with a three-run homer (3) in the sixth and finished with four RBI. LF Bijan Rademacher (.285) had two hits, including a double, scored twice and knocked in a pair. 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.269) had two hits and two RBI, including a solo homer (16) while 2B Gioskar Amaya (.273) delivered two base knocks and C Willson Contreras (.245) scored twice.
On the Hill: Tayler Scott (8-8, 4.34 ERA) made his 26th start allowing four runs in 5.2 frames. He gave up five hits, walked two and fanned one. Gerardo Concepcion (2-0, 1.26 ERA) got the only batter he faced to end the sixth and earned the win. Stephen Perakslis (3.93 ERA) worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and Zach Godley (3.57 ERA) earned his 8th save, recording the final four outs.
Low A—Kane County 6, Cedar Rapids 1
Kane County recorded its minor league leading 90th victory in a game shortened by rain in Cedar Rapids.
At the Dish: Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a RBI single by DH Yasiel Balaguert (.244) and C Victor Caratini (.264) added a sacrifice fly. CF Trey Martin (.248) slugged his fifth homer in the fifth and after a 2B Chesny Young (.333) single, 3B Jeimer Candelario (.258) launched his sixth homer since joining the Cougars. Martin added a RBI single in the sixth scoring SS Carlos Penalver (.213), who reached on an error, stolen second (20), and took third on a wild pitch. Young finished with two hits and scored twice.
On the Hill: Jonathan Martinez (11-5, 3.26 ERA) got credit with a complete game as the right-hander got one out in the sixth before the game was called. The only run scored on a solo homer and he improved to 4-0 with the Cougars. The 20-year-old Venezuelan finished with a line of 5.1 IP, 4H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4K.
Short-Season—Everett 2, Boise 1
Everett pushed across a run in the top of the ninth to beat Boise.
At the Dish: The Hawks only run came in the first when LF Kevin Brown (.262) ripped a two-out triple and scored on 1B Danny Canela’s single. Canela (291) added a double while 3B Jesse Hodges (.269) went 1-for-3 with a double. SS Gleyber Torres (.400) single but committed his fourth error.
On the Hill: Erick Leal (6-2, 3.73 ERA) had another good start, allowing a solo homer over 5.1 innings. He allowed six hits, walked three and set three down on strikes. Sam Wilson worked 1.2 frames of shutout ball and Brad Markey (1-1, 3.00 ERA) allowed two hits in the ninth, his second inning.
Hawks Notes: With Salem-Keizer’s 12-5 loss at Spokane, Boise needs to win one game of the three-game series vs. the Volcanoes that starts Saturday in Boise.
Arizona Rookie League—Diamondbacks 7, Cubs 6
Cubs finished the Arizona Rookie League at 22-34 dropping their final game to the D-Backs.
At the Dish: Cubs had 11 hits but were just 1-for-8 with RISP. LF Calvin Graves (.313), C Erick Castillo (264) and DH Shamil Ubiera (.206) all had two hits. Graves and Eloy Jimenez (.227) knocked in two runs each while CF Kevonte Mitchell (.294) went 1-for-3 and scored three times.
On the Hill: Jose Paulino (5.98 ERA) got the start and allowed two unearned runs on four hits and a walk in five innings. Adbert Alzolay (2-5, 8.51 ERA) gave up three runs in the sixth and took the loss. Andin Diaz (3.60 ERA) surrendered two runs over two innings and Pedro Araujo (2.76 ERA) worked a scoreless ninth.
