Cougars win, Daytona advances

Daytona advanced to the FSL championship for the second straight year sweeping Dunedin. Kane County opened the Midwest League playoffs with a 7-3 win over Wisconsin while Boise got swept out of the playoffs by HIllsboro.

High A—Daytona 9, Dunedin 4

Daytona jumped out to a 8-0 lead and captured the FSL North Division crown.

At the Dish: Daytona didn’t waste anytime getting on the board as a sac fly by 1B Daniel Vogelbach and a two-run homer from Bijan Rademacher made it 3-0. Daytona added five runs in the second, batting around in the frame. Kyle Schwarber delivered a two-run single while Marco Hernandez, Gioskar Amaya and Vogelbach all had RBI singles. Jacob Hannemann had three hits and scored twice from the leadoff spot. Amaya finished with three hits and Vogelbach knocked in his third run in the 9th.

On the Hill: Tayler Scott only lasted two innings and left after the first two hitters of the third reached. The right-hander was charged with four runs on four hits and three walks. He gave up a homer and fanned two. Nathan Dorris was nearly perfect for three innings, issuing only a walk that was wiped out on a double play. Earning the win, the lefty fanned three and his night ended when the rain hit in the fifth. Austin Kirk tossed three shutout frames and Zack Godley retired the side in order in the 9th.

D-Cubs Notes: Daytona heads to Fort Myers on Thursday for game 1 of the FSL championship series. Juan Paniagua is expected to start for Daytona.

Low A—Kane County 7, Wisconsin 3

Jen-Ho Tseng held the Rattlers to a pair of hits over six innings and Mike Olt blasted a three-run homer to lead the Cougars in the opening game of the series.

At the Dish: Kane County pounded Wisconsin for 13 hits, including two from 3B Mike Olt, who is on a rehab assignment. Olt singled in his first trip and then launched a three-run homer in the fifth. DH Mark Zagunis had three hits while CF Trey Martin was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. SS Carlos Penalver and RF Yasiel Balaguert plated runs while C Cael Brockmeyer singled twice. LF Shawon Dunston singled, walked twice and scored twice in the leadoff spot.

On the Hill: Jen-Ho Tseng only gave up two hits—a solo homer and a single that eventually scored on a wild pitch. He fanned four and only needed 67 pitches to get through six innings. Tyler Ihrig earned the save, allowing a run on three hits and a walk over the final three frames. The left-hander fanned four and threw 42 pitches, 30 for strikes.

Cougars Notes: The series moves to Kane County on Thursday night as Duane Underwood gets the start........The Cubs sent 3B Mike Olt to Kane County for a rehab assignment. He’s expected to make two starts and then head to Chicago. C Victor Caratini was placed on the DL and C Tyler Alamo was assigned to the Cougars from Mesa.

Short-Season—Hillsboro 5, Boise 2

Hillsboro ended Boise’s Northwest League title hopes on Wednesday night.

At the Dish: Justin Marra’s two-run homer in the second were the only runs the Hawks put on the board. Rashad Crawford had three of Boise’s six hits as the Hawks went 0-for-6 with RISP and fanned 11 times. Jesse Hodges and Danny Canela singled.

On the Hill: Jeremy Null fanned six over 4.2 innings as the right-hander was charged with three runs on six hits and a walk. Tommy Thorpe gave up a pair of runs in 1.1 frames and James Farris fanned three in two scoreless innings.
