Oct. 10 Cubs Recap

C.J. Edwards made his Arizona Fall league debut, working two innings in Mesa’s 14-3 loss. Billy McKinney won the home run derby at fall instruct beating pitcher Scott Frazier. Play got under way in Mexico and a pari of former Cubs has success in Venezuela.

Arizona Fall League—Surprise 14, Mesa 3
C.J. Edwards made his first AFL start allowing a run in two innings on three hits and a walk. He fanned one and threw 39 pitches, 25 for strikes......Zach Cates relieved Edwards and surrendered a run on two hits and a walk. He fanned one and threw 23 pitches, 14 for strikes......Gerardo Concepcion was the third Cubs pitcher to see action on Friday night, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks in 1.1 innings.......DH Daniel Vogelbach (.143) was the only starter in the lineup and he went 1-for-4 with a single and two strikeouts.

Venezuelan Winter League
Catcher Willson Contreras made his second start in Aragua’s 4-1 loss to Magallanes. The 22-year-old went 0-for-3......A couple of ex-Cub prospects saw action on the mound on Friday. Yeiper Castillo fanned five in five scoreless innings in Zulia’s 9-1 win over Lara. Castillo allowed six hits and walked a pair to record the win. Loiger Padron earned his first hold with a 1-2-3 frame in Caracas’ 6-3 win over Margarita.

Fall Instructs
Arizona Fall Instructs wrapped up on Friday with the Home Run Derby, won by left-handed hitting outfielder Billy McKinney. Pitcher Scott Frazier finished second. Other hitters included Kyle Schwarber, Jeimer Candelario, Gleyber Torres, Victor Caratini, Kevonte Mitchell and Frandy Delarosa. Cubs didn’t play any games against other squads this year but had two weeks of drills and then intra-squad games the final week.

Mexican Pacific Winter League
The Mexican Pacific Winter League opened play Friday night with Mexicali beating Jalisco 8-1. The only Cubs player suiting up in the Mexican League this year is 3B Christian Villanueva of Obregon.
