Cubs Oct. 16 Recap

Missing most of the season with an arm injury, Ivan Pineyro tossed three shutout innings in his first Arizona Fall League start. The Dominican League opened on Thursday night with Junior Lake starting in left field for Estrellas.

Arizona Fall League
Ivan Pineyro made his first start in the AFL after making his debut in relief (1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1K). The right-hander tossed three scoreless frames, working around four hits. He fanned three and only needed 39 pitches, 22 for strikes.......Zach Cates earned his first hold with two scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed two hits, walked one and recorded one strikeout.......1B Daniel Vogelbach (.200) had his best game in the AFL with a RBI double, a single, and two runs scored.......SS Addison Russell (.227) went 1-for-4, reached on a error and scored on Vogelbach’s double, one of two runs........DH Jacob Hannemann (.071) was 0-for-4.

Venezuelan Winter League
Former prospect Yeiper Castillo got the start for Zulia and went four innings but didn’t figure in the decision, a 6-2 win. He allowed a run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Dominican Winter League
The season started Thursday night as Estrellas faced Toros with several Cubs players on the rosters. Jeffry Antigua and Alberto Cabrera are on Toros’ pitching staff while pitcher Marcos Mateo and OF Junior Lake play for Estrellas.......Lake got the start in left field and was 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts in Estrellas’ 5-4 win......Marcos Mateo got the save, working a 1-2-3 ninth with two punchouts......Jeffry Antigua recorded the final two outs for the Toros in the ninth.
