Cubs Recap Oct. 19-20

A look at Cubs prospects in Arizona, Dominican and Venezuela as well as an update on Arismendy Alcantara’s winter plans. Former Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano made news as a DH on Monday and Manny Ramirez collected his first hit.

Arizona Fall League—Surprise 6, Mesa 5
Oct. 20—1B Daniel Vogelbach (.167) doubled in a run and also walked in four trips to the plate.......Jacob Hannemann (.091) went 1-4 with a RBI single......... SS Addison Russell (.161) went 0-5 with a strikeout.....Mesa was 1-for-13 with RISP and stranded 10.....Been a tough first two weeks for the Cubs prospects as only taxi squad player Bijan Rademacher (.455) has his average over his weight.

Oct. 19—No games scheduled.

Venezuelan Winter League
Carlos Zambrano made his debut in a Parallel League game as a DH for Magallanes with a double in four at-bats. The right-hander told reporter Hugo Guerrero that this was his final season and he wanted to go out as a starting pitcher. Zambrano’s goal is to be on the mound by the second week of November.

Oct. 20—Aragua catcher Willson Contreras slugged his first homer in the VWL, a solo shot in the fifth. He also added a sacrifice fly and finished 1-3 and has 5 RBI. Aragua fell to first-place Zulia 10-5.

Oct. 19—Yoanner Negrin got the start for Caracas and surrendered five runs on seven hits in four innings in the 8-3 loss. The right-hander fanned four but the first three hitters of the fifth all reached and scored. The Cuban is now 0-2 with a 5.56 ERA.

Dominican Winter League
According to a story on Licey’s website, Cubs center fielder Arismendy Alcantara is close to joining the team. Alcantara is expected to play this winter for Licey and the details of his agreement are still being discussed between the club and the Cubs. Alcantara said he hopes to play for Licey soon.

Oct. 20—Manny Ramirez went 1-for-4 with a RBI double and a walk in Aguilas’ 7-1 win over Gigantes. It was his first hit of the season. Smokies reliever Frank Batista got the start and tossed five shutout innings and earned the win for Aguilas. The right-hander allowed four hits, walked one, and fanned three.

Oct. 19—Escogido’s Carlos Pimentel saw his first action of the season allowing two runs in relief in the 11-8 loss to Licey. Pimentel, last years DWL Pitcher of the Year, worked 1.1 innings and gave up three hits and a walk.
