Cubs Oct. 21 Recap

Addison Russell blasted his first homer of the AFL season, a two-run shot that helped Mesa to an 11-6 win. Three Cubs pitchers were on display in Arizona and relief pitcher Alberto Diaz has been added to a roster in the Venezuelan Winter League.

Arizona Fall League—Mesa 11, Surprise 6
Addison Russell blasted a two-run homer and three Cubs pitchers saw action in the Solar Sox victory Tuesday afternoon at Surprise Stadium. Russell singled home Jacob Hannemann in the first and then smacked a 2-0 fastball over the left field wall in the fifth. Russell finished 2-for-5 with three strikeouts. Hannemann led off the game with a single, one of three hits, and delivered a two-run single in the 8th.

C.J. Edwards got the start and only lasted two innings, throwing 43 pitches, 24 for strikes. The right-hander allowed the first three hitters of the game to arch on two walks nada single for a 1-0 lead. Edwards needed 28 pitches to get out of the first but retired the next three batters to limit the damage. Mixing in his change-up, Edwards threw 15 pitches in the second that included a one-out walk. In his two innings, his fastball sat 89-92 with a curve in the 77-80 range.

Zach Cates got charged with five runs in 1? innings, including a two-run homer. He allowed seven hits and fanned one in the 32 pitch outing. Cates’ fastball was in the 92-94 range with a slider in the mid-80s. The Saguaros had no problems squaring up the Cates’ fastball.....Gerardo Concepcion has his second straight solid outing, tossing 2? shutout innings. The left-hander fanned two and threw 19 pitches, 12 for strikes. Concepcion threw a steady diet of fastballs in the 90-93 range and a roundhouse curve that sat 74-76.

Venezuelan Winter League
LaGuaria, managed by Buddy Bailey (Tennessee), has added left-handed reliever Alberto Diaz to the Sharks roster. Diaz pitched for Kane County, Boise, and Mesa in 2014 (0-2, 7.52 ERA, 32.1 IP, 40 H, 23 BB, 21 K).

Loiger Padron earned his first win of the season getting the final two our sof the fifth. He gave up a hit that allowed an inherited runner to score and threw 13 pitches, nine for strikes in the 4-3 win over Magallanes. Carlos Zambrano got into the game for Magallanes in the 8th as a pinch hitter. He walked and was lifted for a pinch-runner.

Dominican Winter League
Junior Lake had a tough season (.211/.246/.351, 33.7 K%) and his name is excluded when talking about the Cubs outfield moving forward. If he wants to get back into the conversation Lake needs to solve his problems at the plate. IN the 10-7 loss to Aguilas, Lake went 1-for-5 with a RBI single that gave Estrellas a 1-0 lead.
