Cuban star schedules showcase
Yoan Moncada, a 19-year-old switch-hitting shortstop from Cuba, has scheduled a tentatively for Nov. 12 in Guatemala. Moncada didn’t make any daring escape from Cuba but instead was grant a visa and passport by the Cuban government and left on an airplane to Central America. Reports say the 6-foot-2 infielder has been training the past several months in Guatemala. Because of his age and number of years playing professionally in Cuba, Moncada will be subject to international signing guidelines with team restricted by spending caps. MLB has not yet determined of Moncada will be eligible for the current signing period or wait until the 2015-16 signing period that starts July 2, 2015. If he become eligible under the current signing period, the Cubs would not be eligible to sign Moncada because they exceeded the 2013-14 bonus pool by more than 15 percent and cannot spend more than $250,000.
