The Cubs’ 40-man roster now stands at 38 after the North Siders claimed right-handed pitcher Donn Roach off waivers from San Diego. Roach, 24, made his MLB debut in 2014 and appeared in 16 games, 15 in relief, and was 1-0 with a 4.75 ERA in 30.1 IP. He sported a WHIP of 1.68 and averaged 4.5 BB/9 and 5 K/9.
He was sent to AAA in early June and spent the rest of the season in the PCL, working as a starter and then out of the bullpen. In 13 starts for El Paso, Roach went 4-6 with a 5.43 ERA in 71.1 innings. He yielded a slash line of .321/.404/.828 with 36 BB and 40 K. He finished the year with six relief appearances (0-0, 3.00 ERA, 6 IP, 4 BB, 4 K, .227 BAA). Roach got the start against the Iowa Cubs on June 20 and took the loss allowing six runs on eight hits. Arismendy Alcantara had a pair of doubles but Kris Bryant fanned twice and hit into a double play.
The Las Vegas native was drafted twice by the Angels, once after graduating from Bishop Gorman High School in the 40th round in 2008 and two years later in the 3rd round out of the College of Southern Nevada. Roach began his pro career in the Pioneer League in 2010 and made 45 relief appearances the following year for Cedar Rapids in the Midwest League (5-5, 3.45 ERA, 70.1 IP).
Roach moved into a starting role in 2012 and also changed organizations as he was traded to San Diego in May in a deal for Ernesto Frieri. Roach dominated the California League with both organizations going 10-1 with a 1.94 ERA in 13 starts. He only walked 14 in 88.1 innings and fanned 73. He was ranked the Padres 13th best prospect by MLB.com.
Roach couldn’t follow up his success in 2013 and had command issues with a career-high 2.5 BB/9 and a career-low 4.9 K/9. In 28 starts in AA for San Antonio, Roach went 8-12 with a 3.53 ERA and tossed a career-high 142.2 innings.
Roach’s bread and butter is his sinker, which averages 90 mph, and also mixes in a curve and splitter. A groundball pitcher, Roach provides bullpen depth but needs to clean-up his control issue to be useful on the Cubs 40-man roster.
