Lots of rumors, most tied to Cubs but not much action until now. I’ll try to keep you updated with all the moves around the majors with free agency and trades......Yankees traded catcher Francisco Cervelli to Pittsburgh for left-handed reliever Justin Wilson......A pair of young talented prospects have been swapped as the Blue Jays sent OF Anthony Gose to Detroit for 2B Devon Travis. Tigers also re-signed free agent DH Victor Martinez to a four-year $68 million deal......The Mets got the free agent party started with a two-year, 21 million deal with Rockies OF Michael Cuddyer.
If you are an agent and you don’t have your client tied to the Cubs during free agency, you’re not doing your job. Both Cubs President Theo Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer have warned fans and media to temper their expectations for 2015 and free agency. Epstein said at the GM meetings that the Cubs would not sign two “nine-figure” pitchers this off-season. According to reports the Cubs are expected to meet with Jon Lester next week in Chicago and the Red Sox have also shown interest in the left-hander. The Cubs also recently met with catcher Russell Martin, who some say wants a five-year deal, something the Cubs are not likely to pull the trigger on. The Pirates, Mets and Dodgers have all been linked to Martin. The Cubs have plenty of payroll flexibility and its likely to stay that way when the Cubs break camp in Mesa this spring.
Arizona Fall League—Mesa 4, Glendale 4
Mesa (15-14-2) and Glendale (14-15-2) tied in the final game of the Arizona Fall League season on Thursday. Salt River (17-11-4) won the east division while Peoria (15-14-3) took the west crown. Those two teams will meet on Saturday for the title.......Daniel Vogelbach (.261) went 1-for-5 with a double (4) and a RBI (8)........Ivan Pineyro tossed two frames with three strikeouts. The right-hander tossed 13.2 innings in the AFL with a 1.98 ERA, a .208 BAA and 16 K......Bijan Rademacher (.350) went 0-1 with a walk after pinch-hitting in the 8th......RF Jacob Hannemann (.279) was 0-for-5.......Daniel Lockhart had two singles and scored once getting the start at third.
Venezuelan Winter League
Cubs infielder Luis Valbuena told reporters in Venezuela that he would start playing for Lara on Nov. 29, one day before his 29th birthday. Valbuena hit .249/.341/.435 in 149 games for the Cubs with 16 HR and 51 RBI.........No Cubs prospects saw action.
Dominican Winter League
Marcos Mateo earned his DWL leading 9th save despite allowing an unearned run on two hits in the 9th inning of Estrellas’ 4-2 win over Escogido........SS Marco Hernandez (.296) walked and scored in Licey’s 8-6 win over Gigantes. The 22-year-old has held his own in his first “full” season in the DWL and in 12 games has more walks (3) than strikeouts (2).
Mexican Pacific Winter League
No Cubs prospects saw action.
Puerto Rican Winter League
1B Jonathan Mota (.313) singled and scored in the sixth and added a RBI single in the 8th in San Juan’s 4-0 win over Carolina. Mota also stole a base, his first. CF John Andreoli (.200) went 1-3 and scored a run.
