Russell Martin will not be plying on the North Side this year as the catcher agreed to a deal with Toronto. The Cardinals and Braves made a big trade and it was a light night of action in the winter leagues for Cub prospects.

It took a day but the Cubs went from “front runner” to out of the race in the Russell Martin sweepstakes as the catcher is headed to Toronto after agreeing to a reported five-year, $82 million deal. The Cubs had reportedly offered $68 million for four years.Here’s the Martin story.........Within minutes of the Martin agreement, the Cardinals and Braves announced a blockbuster deal as OF Jason Heyward is headed to St. Louis and Shelby Miller and Tyrell Jenkins are going to Atlanta. The Cards also received relief pitcher Jordan Walden. Here’s the Cardinals take. .And the Braves. ..............In other not so earth shattering news, the A’s claimed OF/1B Alex Hassan off waivers from the Red Sox.......Detroit has exercised a $5.4 million option on catcher Alex Avila.........The Marlins and Giancarlo Stanton made their 13-year, $325 million deal official.

Estrellas scored three runs in the top of the 9th to beat Aguilas 4-1. Manny Ramirez had two hits and walked in the loss while Junior Lake fanned four times for Estrellas and got into a fight in the 8th after striking out. Marcos Mateo worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 10th save.
