Dec. 10—Cubs President Theo Epstein met with Chicago reporters on Wednesday afternoon and said any more deals the Cubs would make would be small ones. Said the Cubs were looking for “clubhouse dudes,” a term coined by manger Joe Maddon. Epstein didn’t comment on the Lester signing as it hasn’t been made official but did say the Cubs had “preserved their future and they will always be trying to build towards a long run.”.............Rule 5 draft is Thursday and its unlikely the Cubs will draft a player in the major league phase. You can expect the Cubs to lose some of their prospects in the minor league phase. I’ll have a complete recap of the Rule 5 draft including any players the Cubs take in the minor league phase. Dec. 9—Cubs won the day with the signing of Jon Lester and the trade for Miguel Montero.

Dec. 10—LF Junior Lake singled, walked twice and scored the game’s only run in Estrellas’ victory over Escogido. A new found approach at the plate, Lake has walked 26 times in 34 games, something that didn’t happen during his stint at Wrigley in 2014. He’s OBP is over .400 in the DWL and he leads the league with 18 stolen bases, although he did get caught for the first time on Wednesday night. Former Cub Marcos Mateo, who will pitch in Japan in 2015, recorded his league-leading 17th save. ..........2B Arismendy Alcantara was 1-for-4 and knocked in a run in Licey’s 2-0 win over Gigantes.
Mexican Pacific Winter League
Dec. 10—Back at third base, Christian Villanueva (.261) slugged his 7th homer and scored twice in Obregon’s 7-5 loss to Mazatlan.
Puerto Rican Winter League
Dec. 10—Jonathan Mota, a long-time Cubs minor leaguer and current free agent, was 1-for-3 and is hitting .216.........Javier Baez is expected to debut for Santurce on Thursday against Mayaguez.
Venezuelan Winter League
Dec. 10—LHP Joseph Ortiz surrendered two runs on three hits in one inning of La Guaria’s 6-2 loss to Magallanes. Ortiz has a 4.15 ERA in 14 IP..........Luis Valbuena (.226) double in a run and walked in Lara’s 9-4 win over Margarita.....Willson Contreras ‘ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th gave Aragua a 9-8 11-inning win over Caribes. Contreras entered the game as a pinch runner in the 9th and played 1B.
