Cubs announce TV deal
The Chicago Cubs and WLS-TV/ABC 7 announced an agreement to broadcast 25 games per year through 2019 on the Chicago station. “We are excited to have WLS-TV as our new television broadcast partner,” said President of Business Operations Crane Kenney in a prepared statement. “WLS-TV has established itself as a trusted voice in Chicago, and we look forward to a new chapter of Cubs baseball airing on the flagship station of the ABC television network.” The Cubs are expected to put the remaining 45 games on WGN-Chicago. All other games will be on CSN-Chicago, ensuring all Cubs games will be shown in the Chicago area.
Cubs make Hammel signing official
The Cubs made the Jason Hammel signing official on Friday. Hammel told reporters he and Lester talked about the Cubs while in Oakland and said he probably left money on the table but wanted to come back to Chicago. The Cubs will pay the right-hander $18 million over the next two seasons with an option for a third year that includes a $2 million buyout.
Cubs News and Notes
The Texas Rangers have reportedly signed former Cubs reliever Kyuji Fujikawa, who missed most of 2014 after Tommy John surgery. In two seasons with Cubs, Fujikawa made 27 relief appearances and threw 25 innings with a 5.04 ERA.
Puerto Rican Winter League
The Javier Baez (.286) watch continued Friday night as he batted third and was the DH. After a walk and a groundout in his first two plate appearances, Baez singled to left field for his first base hit and added another single in the sixth. He fanned in his final at-bat as Mayaguez rallied to beat Santurce 10-9...........3B Jonathan Mota was 2-for-5 and knocked in a run in San Juan’s 5-4 loss to Caguas.
Venezuelan Winter League
Luis Valbuena (.237) slugged a pair of homers but hit wasn’t enough as Lara fell to Magallanes 4-2. Villanueva hit a pair of solo shots in the fifth and seventh innings and finished 2-for-4........Joseph Ortiz earned his 7th hold with 1.1 innings of shutout relief. The lefty allowed a hit and walked one in La Guaira’s 7-1 wi over Caribes.
Dominican Winter League
2b Arismendy Alcantara (.294) singled twice, scored two runs, and walked in Licey’s 8-7 loss to Gigantes......LF Junior Lake (.254) went 0-for-4 in Estrellas’ 1-0 win over Escogido. Former Cub reliever Marcos Mateo earned his league-leading 18th save......Jeffry Antigua tossed two perfect innings and earned the win in Toros 6-5 14 innings victory. The left-hander has appeared in eight games (1-0, 2.35 ERA) and it was his first game since Nov. 23.
Mexican Pacific Winter League
3B Christian Villanueva (.252) went 1-for-4 with a single in Obregon’s 7-3 los to Mexicali.
