Cubs Dec. 21 Recap

Luis Valbuena smacked his 4th homer and Willson Contreras tallied his fifth long ball in Venezuelan Winter League action on Sunday.

Venezuelan Winter League
Luis Valbuena (.230) slugged his 4th homer, a two-run shot in the 6th to tie the game at 4-4. It was Valbuena’s only hit of the game in four plate appearances in Lara’s 6-5 loss to Magallanes. The 29-year-old hit 16 long balls for the Cubs in ’14 in 478 at-bats.......Joseph Ortiz improved to 3-0 and lowered his ERA to 3.00 with a scoreless frame in La Guaria’s 7-4 win over Margarita. Ortiz, 24, one of the few lefty relievers on the Cubs 40-man roster, has appeared in 19 games with 4 BB and 8 K in 18 IP.......Willson Contreras (.267) knocked three runs, including a pair in the 9th on his 5th homer of the season. The backstop has 17 RBI for Aragua, who lost 8-7 to Zulia.

Dominican Winter League
In the regular season finale, Junior Lake went 0-for-4 with a walk and scored a run in Estrellas’ 5-2 win over Toros. 3B Jeimer Candelario played his second game and was hitless in four at-bats for Toros. Both teams are headed to the round-robin, four-team playoffs.

Mexican Pacific Winter League
3B Christian Villanueva walked and finished 0-for-2 with a strikeout. Villanueva has clubbed nine homers but is only hitting .212 (32-151) in 44 games. The 23-year-old should start year in AAA and may even see some action in left field if Kris Bryant starts the year in Iowa.

Puerto Rican Winter League
John Andreoli didn’t play in San Juan’s 3-1 loss to Mayaguez.......Javier Baez and Santurce had the day off.
