IF Logan Watkins and RHP Donn Roach have cleared waivers and have been assigned to Iowa. They were taken off the 40-man roster to make room for OF Shane Peterson and C Ryan Lavarnway..........Former Cubs pitcher Casey Coleman has been assigned to AAA Omaha by the Royals and can either accept the assignment or declare for free agency.
Hot Stove News
After several teams saying they hadn’t won the bid for Korean SS Jung-Ho Kang, it was announced the Pirates posted the wining bid of just over $5 million. I saw one scouting report that Kang would probably need some time in the minors starting at AA and another one saying he could play immediately in majors. The Pirates have 30 days to come to terms with the 27-year-old, who hit 40 homers in ’14 for Nexen Heroes of the Korean Baseball Organization.
Venezuelan Winter League
Rubi Silva has joined Aragua and made his debut on Sunday, going 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts. Silva played in 81 games in AA in ’14 (.246/.286/.375, 6 HR, 7 SB), missing part of the season with an injury. The 25-year-old Cuban was signed as a free agent in 2010. Silva was 0-for-4 on Monday night with 2 K for the second straight game. Aragua’s Willson Contreras (.267) pinch-ran in the 7th and stayed in the game behind the plate. He fanned in his only plate appearance in the 5-4 loss to Magallanes.
Dominican Winter League
Former Cubs reliever Marcos Mateo has been named the Dominican Winter League most valuable player and also been named pitcher of the year. Mateo has a contract to play in Japan in 2015 for the Chinichi Dragons. Mateo set a league record with 21 saves and finished with a 0.70 WHIP in 25.2 innings to go along with 45 K and 5 BB.
The Dominican Winter League Round-Robin Tournament begins on Dec. 27 with Toros (24-26) facing Estrellas (32-18) while Gigantes (28-22) plays Aguilas (30-20). The 18-game schooled concludes Jan. 17.
Mexican Pacific Winter League
3B Christian Villanueva (.209) was 0-for-2, walked twice and scored a run in Obregon’s 7-3 loss to Jalisco.
Puerto Rican Winter League
Tough night at the plate for 2B Javier Baez (.346) as he struckout swinging in his first two at-bats, lined out to center and added a RBI groundout in the seventh.
