Cubs claim Kickham
It was a busy day for transactions for the Cubs. The Cubs claimed LHP Michael Kickham off waivers from the Giants but lost two recent additions to the 40-man roster. OF Shane Peterson was claimed off waivers by the Brewers and the Orioles grabbed C Ryan Lavarnway. The Cubs had claimed both players on waiver wire deals last week from the A’s and Dodgers. Baseball America reported the Cubs have signed minor league outfielder Adron Chambers.
A starter for his entire career with the Giants in the minors, Kickham provides more left-handed depth for the pitching staff. The 26-year-old made his MLB debut in 2013 after being a 6th round pick in 2010 out of Missouri State University. Appearing in 14 big league games (three starts), Kickham has a 10.98 ERA in 30.1 innings. Kickham is armed with a sinking fastball in the low 90s and also throws a slider. In 2012, the lefty started 27 games and went 11-10 with a 3.05 ERA (150.2 IP) in the AA Texas League. He made 27 starts in AAA in ’14 and went 8-8 with a 4.43 ERA in 148.2 IP. (1.58 WHIP, 3.9 BB/9, 7.9 K/9).
With a shortage of outfielders in AAA, the Cubs added minor league outfielder Adron Chambers, a former Cardinal and veteran of 22 post-season games. The 28-year-old can play all three OF positions and has a career .216/.289/.295 slash line in 99 plate appearances over three seasons. The Red Birds 38th round pick in 2007, Chambers worked his way up the Cardinals minor league chain and made his MLB debut in 2011, which included a World Series ring. He was granted free agency after 2013, signed by the Astros, and then traded in June to Toronto. In 50 AAA games between the two organizations, Chambers hit .283/.351/.411 in 206 plate appearances.
With a roster spot open, the Cubs officially announced the signing of C David Ross.
