Cubs have added several minor league free agents and the winter leagues returned to action.

Cubs add minor league free agents
The Cubs have gone around the globe to add pitchers to the organization. According to Baseball America, Chicago has signed RHP Jesus Camargo (Mexican League), RHP Anthony Carter (Japan) and RHP Fernando Cruz (Royals) to minor league deals. They also added OF Adorn Chambers and SS Jonathan Herrera.

Camargo, 19, made one appearance the Mexican League in 2014, allowing a hit in 2.1 scoreless frames. Carter is a former White Sox farmhand and pitched in Japan in 2014 after eight minor league seasons. Cruz, 24, was a former catcher in the ROyals system and after five seasons switched to the mound in 2011 and was released after the 2012 season. This winter, he’s made 12 relief appearances for Santurce in Puerto Rico, and has 19 K in 20.2 innings.

Chambers won a World Series ring with the Cardinals in 2011 and spent 2014 in AAA between Astros and Blue Jays. Herrera, 30, played five years with the Rockies (.265/.325/.332) and was traded to Boston last year, appearing in 42 games for the Red Sox (.233/.307/.289). Herrera provides the Cubs organizational depth in the middle infield as he has big league experience as second and short.

Venezuelan Winter League
Rubi Silva collected his first hit of the winter, a single, and added a RBI sacrifice fly in Aragua’s 7-4 win over Margarita.......With the regular season ending on Dec. 30, Caribes, Zulia, Aragua and Magallanes have qualified for the round-robin playoffs.

Dominican Winter League
DWL round-robin playoffs get underway on Saturday with Gigantes facing Aguilas and Toros traveling to Estrellas........ Junior Lake led the league with 21 stolen bases, tied for first with 30 walks and 51 strikeouts, and tied for second in runs scored (27)........Manny Ramirez finished 2nd in total bases (75), 3rd in RBI (28) and OPS (.920), and 4th in average (.313) and OBP (.409).

Mexican Pacific Winter League
Christian Villanueva hasn’t played since Dec. 23.

Puerto Rican Winter League
Javier Baez (.263) went 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base (2) in Santurce’s 3-2 win over Caguas.
