Cubs Dec. 27 Recap

The Dominican League playoffs have started and Luis Valbuena hit a three-run homer to give Lara a 5-2 win in Venezuelan Winter League action on Saturday night.

For the second time this month Starlin Castro’s named surfaced in a shooting in the Dominican Republic. Back on Dec. 9, Castro’s name was mentioned in a story in the Dominican saying the three-time all-star shortstop was wielding a machine gun and shooting into a crowd. Castro denied any involvement in the shooting and was cleared by police. On Saturday, Castro’s name once again appeared in a story in the Dominican saying he and six others had been arrested in a shooting. Castro and his agent both denied the reports and he was cleared of any wrong doing as police have a video of the incident, which includes Castro’s body guard and brother.

Dominican Winter League
The Dominican League round-robin playoffs started on Saturday with Gigantes beating Aguilas 2-1 in 11 innings and Estrellas blanking Toros......Junior Lake went 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in the shutout win by Estrellas.Former Cubs reliever Alberto Cabrera got Toros out of a jam in the fifth but gave up two runs on two hits in the fifth.........Manny Ramirez was 0-for-3 with a walk before being lifted for a pinch runner in the extra inning loss. Former Cubs minor league pitcher Carlos Pimentel (Iowa ’14) got the start for Gigantes and allowed a run in 4.1 innings on four hits and four walks.

Venezuelan Winter League
Luis Valbuena (.231) hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning sot lead Lara to a 5-2 win over La Guaira. Valbuena was 0-for-3 with a walk before his fifth homer of the season. LHP Joseph Ortiz (.2.95 ERA, 18.1 IP) got the final out of the game for La Guaira............Aragua’s Willson Contreras singled as a pinch-hitter in the 9th and RF Rubi Silva (.091) went 0-for-3 in the 8-0 loss..........Magallanes Jonathan Herrera (.235) saw his first action since Dec. 21 with a pair of hits and a run scored in four at-bats in the 5-3 win over Caracas. Herrera was signed by the Cubs as a minor league free agent with a invite to spring training. Yonner Negrin got the start for Caracas, working 5.1 scoreless frames. He surrendered four hits walked one and recorded four punchouts.

Mexican Winter League
Christian Villanueva had a pair of singles in five trip to the plate in Obregon’s 6-2 win over Hermosillo.

Puerto Rican Winter League
No Cubs players saw action.
