Cubs Dec. 29 Recap

Day 3 of the Dominican Winter League playoffs, the Mexican Winter Leg ended its regular season, while regular season play in Puerto Rico and Venezuela end on Tuesday.

Dominican Winter League
Estrellas (2-1) downed Aguilas (1-2) 5-1 and Gigantes (3-0) remained unbeaten with a 2-1 victory over Toros.......LF Junior Lake went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles for Estrellas. Former Cub reliever Marcos Mateo threw the final inning for Estrellas. DH Manny Ramirez went 0-for-4 for Aguilas and RHP Frank Batista tossed two innings of relief, allowing an unearned run on two hits and a walk.

Venezuelan Winter League
Rubi Silva continues to struggle as the RF went 0-for-3 in Aragua’s 3-2 win and is now hitting .091 (2-for-22).....2B Luis Valbuena (.232) singled in three at-bats and scored once in Lara’s 7-2 win over Caribes.......LHP Joseph Ortiz earned his 9th hold retiring the only batter he faced in the sixth inning. Ortiz, who could compete for a left-handed bullpen spot for Cubs this spring, has a 2.89 ERA in 18.2 IP (21 games).

Mexican Pacific Winter League
3B Christian Villanueva singled in his first three at-bats, adding a RBI in a six-run 5th, and ended the night 3-for-4 in Obregon’s 7-3 win over Hermosillo in the regular season finale.

Puerto Rican Winter League
No Cubs players saw action as Santurce (Javier Baez) had the day off and John Andreoli is no longer seeing action for San Juan. Caguas (24-13), Mayaguez (21-16), Santurce (18-19) and Carolina (18-19) have all qualified for the playoffs.
