Cubs News and Rumors
According to various reports, the Cubs will sign 34-year-old outfielder Chris Denorfia to a one-year deal for $2.6 million. Former Cubs player John Baker broke the news on twitter Wednesday. Primarily a corner outfielder with good defensive skills, Denorfia has spent the past five seasons in San Diego (.275/.332/.399, 573 games) and had career-high in HR (10) and RBI (47) in 2013. He was drafted by the Reds in 2002, traded to the A’s in 2007, and granted free agency in 2009, signing with Padres. He was shipped to the Mariners last July and became a free agent at season’s end. The Cubs have not made the signing official as the 40-man roster is currently full and another move needs to be made. Cubs have right-handed hitting outfielders Junior Lake and Matt Szczur on the 40-man roster so one of those two may be on their way out. Chicago is also carrying three catchers and some have speculated that Welington Castillo would be traded. In any case, Denorfia is at best a platoon OF with Chris Coghlan in left.
