Cubs Jan. 5 Notebook

The Cubs announced pitchers and catchers will report for spring training on Feb. 19 and the first full squad workout is Feb. 25. A recap of winter league playoff action including another Manny Ramirez homer.

Spring training starts Feb. 19
Catchers and pitchers will report to Mesa for spring training Feb. 19 and position players will show up on Feb. 24. The Cubs first full squad workout is Feb. 25. The Cubs open their spring training schedule on Thursday, March 5, with split squad games with the A’s at Cubs Park and the Giants in Scottsdale. They face the A’s in Las Vegas March 13-14 and end their spring schedule with two games against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field April 3-4.

Hot Stove News
The White Sox have signed former Cubs utility man Emilio Bonifacio to a one-year, $4 million deal with a club option for 2016. Bonifacio started 2014 with the Cubs and was traded to the Braves in July along with LHP James Russell for minor league catcher Victor Caratini.

Venezuelan Winter League
Magallanes improved to 2-1 with a 8-4 win over La Guaria (0-2). 3B Jonathan Herrera went 2-for-4 and scored twice in the win........Caribes (2-1) defeated Aragua (1-1) 3-2. Rubi Silva pinch ran in the 8th and former Cubs closer Carlos Marmol tossed a scoreless inning of relief for Aragua.

LHP Joseph Ortiz had a solid season for La Guaria after being acquired via the waiver wire from Texas at the start of the off-season. Ortiz appeared in 23 games and compiled a BAA of .188 against lefties. He ended the regular season with eight scoreless frames in his final eight games and finished with a 3-0 mark, a 2.57 ERA, one save and 10 holds, third in the league.

Dominican Winter League
Moises Sierra hit a walk-off grand slam off former Cubs reliever Marcos Mateo in the bottom of the 9th as Gigantes (6-2) scored five times to beat Estrellas 9-5. Junior Lake went 0-for-4 but knocked in a run with a bases loaded walk in the 8th to give Estrellas a 5-4 lead........Manny Ramirez slugged his second homer of the playoffs, a solo shot, to help Aguilas (4-4) to a 4-1 win over Toros (3-5). Ramirez finished 1-for-3 with a walk and was lifted for a pinch runner in the 8th.

Mexican Pacific Winter League
Obregon took a 3-1 lead in their series against Mexicali with a 3-1 win. Christian Villanueva went 0-for-4 for Obregon and former Cubs outfielder Dave Sappelt hit his second homer of the playoffs for Mexicali........In other playoff action, Jalisco completed the sweep of Mazatlan with a 4-1 win and Culiacan evened their series with Los Mochis with a 2-1 victory in 11 innings.

Puerto Rican Winter League
The round-robin playoffs had the day off. Standings are Santurce (3-0), Caguas (1-2), Carolina (1-2), Mayaguez (1-2).........Javier Baez played in 11 games before the playoff started, hitting .233/.306/.442 with 2 HR. Baez also fanned 21 times.....Recovering from a wrist injury that ended his 2014 regular season at AA Tennessee, OF John Andreoli played in 26 games for San Juan. Among the stolen base leaders with nine, the 24-year-old hit .216/.278/.330 in 88 at-bats with a homer and three RBI.
