Padres sign Mateo
According to various reports from San Diego, the Padres have signed former Cubs relief pitcher Marcos Mateo. The Most Valuable Player and Pitcher of the Year in the Dominican Winter League, Mateo agreed to a minor league deal. It was reported back in November that Mateo, a free agent, had a deal to play in Japan. After suffering an arm injury in 2012, Mateo came back at the end of 2013 and threw 37.1 IP at Iowa in ’14 (3-0, 3.86 ERA, 17 BB, 43 K, 1.37 WHIP).
Venezuelan Winter League
La Guaria won their first game of the playoffs, beating Zulia 2-1. No Cubs players saw action........Magallanes improved to 3-1 with a 7-1 victory over Aragua (1-3). Jonathan Herrera smacked a two-run homer off Iowa Cubs pitcher Yoanner Negrin in the first inning. Herrera finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Negrin took the loss, allowing five runs over 4.1 innings. Rubi Silva was 0-for-3 in the loss.
Dominican Winter League
Gigantes is running away with the playoffs as they improved to 7-2 with a 3-1 win over Toros. Former Cubs prospect Carlos Pimentel got the win, allowing a run in five innings......Estrellas walked away with a 2-1 win over Aguilas, scoring the wining run in the bottom of the 10th. Junior Lake was 1-for-4 with a walk in the win. Manny Ramirez was 0-for-4 in the loss and Frank Batista worked a scoreless inning for Aguilas.
Mexican Pacific Winter League
Had the day off. Jalisco swept Mazatlan in four games while Los Mochis and Obregon lead their best-of-seven series 3-2.
Puerto Rican Winter League
Santurce (4-1) dropped their first game of the round-robin playoffs, falling 1-0 to Carolina (2-3). Mayaguez (3-2) moved into contention with a 5-0 blanking of Caguas (1-4). In the Santurce loss, 2B Javier Baez went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts.
