Cubs radio voice Pat Hughes was named Illinois Sportscaster of the Year for 2014, the ninth time he’s won the award. Hughes starts his 20th season with the Cubs, and 33rd as a big league broadcaster.
Hot Stove News
The Pirates and Korean shortstop Jung-Ho Kang to a four-year, $16 million deal. The 27-year-old hit 40 HR in the KBO and the Pirates earned the right to negotiate with Kang after bidding just over $5 million. Opinions vary on Kang, not only on what position he will end up at but where he should start his career. Some some scouts say he should start in AA while others feel he’s ready for the majors........White Sox and OF Dayan Viciedo have avoided arbitration and agreed to a one-year $4.4 million deal.
Venezuelan Winter League
Magallanes (5-3) kept pace with idle Caribes (6-2) with a 7-2 win over Zulia. 3B Jonathan Herrera went 0-for-3 in the win. Former Cubs minor leaguer Yeiper Castillo got the start for Zulia and took the loss, allowing four runs over four innings......Aragua (3-5) scored 12 runs over the final four innings and beat La Guaira 15-12. LHP Joseph Ortiz took the loss for La Guaria (3-5) allowing three runs, including a two-run homer in the 9th.
Dominican Winter League
With five games remaining, Estrellas (7-6) has a two-game lead over Aguilas (5-8) for the final playoff spot as Gigantes has already clinched a spot. Toros has an outside shot at 4-9 with five games remaining. Estrellas will get a boost as Seattle Mariner big leaguer Robinson Cano will begin playing for the Stars.
Mexican Pacific Winter League
Both series are evened at one game apiece as Obregon defeated Jalisco 6-5 while Mexicali downed Culiacan 7-1. 3B Christian Villanueva went 0-for-2 but knocked in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 8th inning.
Puerto Rican Winter League
Javier Baez’ walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th gave Santurce (6-2) a 5-4 win over Caguas (2-6). With runners on first and second and one out in the bottom of the 10th, Baez delivered a base hit to left field to give Santurce the win. Baez finished 2-for-6 and scored a run.......Pete Praise, a former Cardinals farmhand, tossed a one-hit shutout as Mayaguez (5-3) blanked Carolina (3-5) 1-0.
