Castillo, avoid arbitration
The Cubs reached deals with five more arbitration eligible players on Friday, inking deals with Jake Arrieta ($3.63 million) Wellington Castillo ($2.1 million), Travis Wood ($5.685 M), and IF Luis Valbuena ($4.2 M). Pedro Strop and the Cubs are still negotiating. Felix Doubront ($1.925 M) and Chris Coghlan ($2.505 M) signed earlier.
Hot Stove News
The Tigers and David Price avoided arbitration agreeing on a $19.75 million deal.....White Sox and RHP Jeff Samardzija agreed to a $9.8 million deal to avoid arbitration.....The Pirates and Korean SS Jung-Ho Kang made their deal official, a four-year $11 million deal with a $5.5 club option in 2019......Orioles avoided arbitration with four of their top players—C Matt Wieters ($8.3 million), 1B Chris Davis ($12 M), RHP Chris Tillman ($4.315 M) and LHP Brian Matusz (3.25 M).
Venezuelan Winter League
Caribes (9-3) took over first-place with a 8-6 win over La Guaria (3-8). Aragua (4-7) scored seven runs in the first two inning and defeated Zulia (4-7) 9-3. LHP Joseph Ortiz fanned the only hitter he faced for La Guaria.
Dominican Winter League
The league championship begins on Saturday as Estrellas and Gigantes square off in the best-of-nine series. Estrellas holds the home field advantage and have added Seattle’s Robinson Cano to the line-up. Junior Lake plays for Estrellas as well as former Cubs relievers Marcos Mateo and Rafael Dolis. Lake flew to Chicago for the Cubs Convention and is expected to return to his team on Sunday.
Mexican Pacific Winter League
Jalisco took a 3-2 series lead with a 5-3 win over Obregon. Culiacan stayed alive with a 2-0 win over Mexicali and trail the series 3-2........Christina Villanueva didn’t play for Obregon.
Puerto Rican Winter League
Santurce (8-3) remained in first with a 4-3 11-inning win over Mayaguez. Javier Baez didn’t play as he was in Chicago for the Cubs Convention. Carolina (6-5) beat Caguas 7-0.
